Default Clucking With Penguins: A Beginner's Guide to Linux

Quote:
Whether you need a secure server, a stable render box, or you're just looking for a way to save money on your next build, Linux is often an excellent choice. Perhaps you've tried Linux before and gave up after dozens of frustrating hours of hacking patches, compiling drivers, and incompatible file formats. Or maybe you're interested in Linux, but you don't know how to go about obtaining and using it. You may even be scared to try it after hearing the horror stories of early Linux systems. If you fall into any of these categories, this article was written especially for you.

If you've used both Windows and Mac before, you must realize that operating systems can be quite different from one another. Some of the differences are good, and some of them aren't so good. Before we get started, we need to explain a few of the most pertinent differences. But first, we must introduce you to Tux the penguin. You'll be seeing him a lot from now on, so you might as well get to know him on a first name-basis.

You should always use Bittorrent for files that large. HTTP downloads are bound to have packet errors every 2GB, and this is 3GB. Bittorrent fixes those problems automatically :)

Never had a problem with HTTP downloading files 2+GB...

Plus, Bit Torrent download speeds vary too much for my liking, my download manager can max my connection...

Not all router configurations will do this, but the vast majority of them will. And with a P2P network, you're bound to have someone with corrupt data. Bittorrent keeps track of everything with the checksum.

I've tried many linux distro's but the downloading and installing of programs sucks. I mean to even install a media player you have to jump thru hoops to get everything. Unlike windows where a installer takes care of everything you need, in linux you have to go on a hunting expedition. Other than that the interface and installing is just as easy as windows and I'd use it for a internet and office computer if there wasn't the program installation issue. I guess I just don't have the patience for learning a different OS but I'll keep trying new distro's and hopefully find one I like someday.

You're right for the most part, though many distros such as Fedora have excellent package managers. It'll automatically download all the software you need. If you don't have a package manager, it's a real PITA.

Fedora and Mandrake are the 2 I like the most but I'm a **** really and I realise that many of the power linux users like Ubuntu and other distro's. Still there would be nothing better than a disto that was as easy or should I say as familiar as Windows for the inexperienced user.

I'm with you there. There's been a rumor floating around that Google will make that distro, but Google states that they have no formal plans of releasing Goobuntu (it's staff-only right now).
