| I've been using AVG Free Anti-Virus for a while now, and it seemed to be working good, but now when i start the computer, it comes up with this error message, and AVG doesn't work "avgcc.exe - Unable To Locate Component This application has failed to start because MSVCR71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." I've tried Re-installing it and it seemed to fix, but the next time i started the PC up the same message came up. Anyone experienced this or heard about it, or have any thoughts how i could fix it? | 5 Minute Mod Man
| First an unlikely (but possible) conclusion that many people may suggest off the bat. There is a possibility that a virus/trojan could be rewriting itself as a DLL. Sometimes they try to hide themselves as 'valid' files so they are not as easily detected. BUT usually these type of DLL errors are not caused by viruses/trojans. Most likely a valid program or update is causing the issue. Sometimes DLL errors like this are caused when other programs or microsoft have included a DLL file with the same name during an update or install. While it could be an older version of the DLL file, it will likely be an updated DLL file (that could be shared by multiple programs). This could be a new/changed file that AVG is not yet recognizing. You may want to check to see if AVG has an updated version for you to install, or ask them directly about the file error. You may also want to try uninstalling any programs that you recently installed to see if that will fix the problem. If Microsoft did an update that caused it then they will usually offer a hotfix relatively quickly, so you may want to do a search at microsoft.com as well. I would do it for you but I am limited on time at the moment. I hope this offers a little help. | ||||||||||||||

| Any recent hardware or software changes? Any reason to believe you may have been infected with malware? For poops and giggles, I'd advise running HiJackThis and posting a log (don't make any changes). | ||||||||||||||

| Frosty, I would suggest since you are running XP that you look at Active Virus Shield. Free Anti-Virus Protection - Active Virus Shield The offer is from AOL and normally I would run away but the software is a rebadged version of Kaspersky AV, which is one of the best period. I have used this on a number of XP based system and found it does the job just as well as the commerical version of Kaspersky. | ||||||||||||||

Before you use this software read this link. You are signing an agreement that let's AOL send you spam and monitor your activity if they so choose. AOL antivirus software slammed by consumer advocates

| Not sure how much monitoring they can do, unless the AV has something esle in it and all the reviews I have read said it is Kaspersky with a redone, slightly GUI. As for the SPAM, EVERY company does that with ANY free AV so it is minor at best of an issue. I will research further the monitoring item. Addition: just read through the article, the tool bar, which i never use anyway is a big issue for some, I would suggest ditching it no matter what, all those toolbard add-ons are trash. The AV has no monitoring software and AOL is changing the liscencing to fix some concerns. The SPAM like I said is an issue with everyone, NO free program for AV is 100% free, SPAM is a price we all pay for them. Last edited by Computer-Ed; June 8th, 2007 at 08:13. | ||||||||||||||

For anyone wishing to give the AOL anti-virus a whirl, I strongly recommend using a temporary email service, and be certain you're aware of the above. While Kaspersky is one of the best AV coders out there (they're one of my favorite non-free AV programs), AOL is an aggressive marketer and not a company I would trust with this level of reporting on my PC.
