Avast vs AVG, or use both?

No.... one program will do just fine you don't need both. In fact they may interfere with each other.

AVG, and run 1 choice of anti-virus. One might detect the other as a virus, then you'd have super-trouble

Both review well. AVG is a bit more popular. Avast got tagged (falsly) as malware early on - but its legit, works great, and its obviously not malware. Niether is 100% - but I can't think of any AV that is.

You can sometimes run 2 AV packages at the same time, but it's (very) NOT recommended - and I have first hand experience at what can go wrong when AV packages fight. I almost had to reformat.

Although I have to say it was interesting to watch as they detected each other as viral activity. Not fun to fix though.
