It's really that easy. Download the 1.1Mb Wubi Exe and put it in a Folder. Just make sure you have 6Gb of HDD space and you're all set. Wubi couldn't download the ISO on my machine, so I had to manually download the Ubuntu ISO and put it in the Wubi folder. Once that was done, 15 minutes later, I have a working Ubuntu install. This is the first time I've had Ubuntu run with my 8800GTS 640 without a bunch of crazy video driver issues.

Wubi makes the partitions, configures your system as a dual boot and presents you with start up options to boot into Linux or Vista. So far, there's been no instabilities in either OS. I've run multiple benchmarks in Vista and it scores the same as before the Wubi Ubuntu install.

This is as simple as it gets. Period. If you've been looking for a way to install Linux that's easier than running the ISO, this is it.

And yes, the F@H SMP client runs just fine.

In researching this, it looks like people that have had major issues installing Linux on their laptops are having great success with this method.

Wubi FAQ.

Enjoy.

Give it a shot. I've now used this on two desktops and two laptops, spanning Vista, XP and Win2K. They all worked and now dual boot into Ubuntu. My ZD8000 from HP has been famous for the wireless card not working and spotty touchpad compatibility. I'm happy to say that both work after this install.

Now if this would magically make xrotate (I think it was) work with ati drivers... then this could be nifty.

Wait, it does allow you to configure that yourself, right? If so I'll give it a shot. I really don't trust auto-partition programs :P

You can pick the size of the partition, but Wubi actually makes it.
