Default 3DMark06

I downloaded 3DMark06 and tried it out tonight, and I gotta say I got some very different results than when I run 3DM05. I still only got the "short" version, even though the whole thing is over 500MB.

I will usually get a 3DMark score of 7600 or so in 3DM05 (on my OC), but with this new one I get about half the score I was expecting. And in the 05 version, my frame rates show in the high 20s, 30s and 40s - where this one shows much lower fps for some reason.

These were my results:

3838 3DMarks
SM2.0 Score: 1663
HDR/SM3.0: 1656
CPU Score: 1077
Return to Proxycon: 13.080fps
Firefly Forest: 14.641fps
Canyon Flight: 14.193fps
Deep Freeze: 18.929fps
CPU1: Red Valley 0.338fps
CPU2: Red Vallet 0.548fps

I don't know...maybe this one would get better results on a 7900 or 7950, but I don't consider my 7800 a slouch. Ah well...

Read this for a bit of understanding, especially look at the screenies, well at least it was justifiable for me.

Gig-O-Ram: You have a single core processor. 3DMark06 shows MUCH higher scores on dual core CPUs. Further, 3DMark scores aren't everything, can you play your games the way you want to play them? If the answer to that question is "yes," then who cares what your 3DMark score is? I use it for bragging rights, that's it. I can beat out 9k in '06 at least, and over 12k in '05. But it really doesn't matter as much as people think it does.

While 3DMark is relevant, it is not the be-all-end-all benchmark.

Brand new build and I can't even break 6K. Of course, things would be a lot different if I had SLI'ed 2 7950GT's.

Yes, I can play FarCry and FEAR on full settings, so in that I'm happy. I just thought that my scores between the two would be similar. But I did read that article, and I understand better now about what it's doing. According to the test results the guy got across different video cards, my card did about as well as could be expected, single core CPU notwithstanding.

I use the score as well to say, "Hey! Look at my score!" - but I know it's not as important as how well a game actually performs.

I've downloaded a lot of programs that will show me this benchmark or that, and I get different numbers from all of them - but as long as the system performs as I want it to, a number is just a number whether I take the number seriously or not.

I don't use benchmarks, as I don't play that high of games. The highest game I play is Rise of Nations or City Life. Right now I have Poker Superstars II and Zoo Tycoon Deluxe, and hardly play at all.
