Default A question about upside down power supplies

I have my parts ordered and on the way for my new PC, installing in my current case. The last time I upgraded my PSU for this case, I got it home and realized that the fan was on the top instead of coming out the back like my old one, and there was no vent on top of my case. So I just beat some holes with a screwdriver in the top of the case.

My new PSU coming is the same way. I'm wondering what will be better, turning it upside down where it will be blowing right by the processor, but not have anything blocking it, or keep it right side up, and use my custom holes, which aren't near as many as a real vent would have.

I haven't had any problems with the way the old PSU was, but I will be drawing considerably more power now.

It really doesn't matter which way the PSU is oriented in a case so long as it is securely fastened to the PSU plate and that its fans have unobstructed airflow. I am not quite sure why you feel that a PSU must be oriented with its fan right side up, hence your putting holes in the top of your case (ouch!) to accomodate the PSU fan. In any event, as long as you have exhaust fans in the rear of your case (you should) then there should be no problem with having your PSU oriented with its fan pointing down.

Agreed! The orientation of your Psu has no bearing, except for flow. You can pretty much do what you want to with it. If you're that worried about flow then I would consider upgrading your case fans. JMO

Thanks for the reply

actually, I didn't even think about turning it upside down until I was moving everything from my old computer to an even older case and run into the same problem, prompting me to finally think outside the box and turn the PSU upside down.

I don't have any vents in the back, but have two with fans on the side.

And the holes in the top don't bother me any. Case has stickers all over it anyway. I'm not super huge on the look of the case, just like what's inside(that's poetic)

The fan is not blowing out of the power supply, it's sucking air in.
If you can turn it without much effort, do so. It is intended to be used this way and the fan is not there for nothing. ;)

HAHAHA, you bashed holes in the top with a screw driver!!

Anyway, the typical way power supplies are mounted is with the fan facing down into the case toward the CPU. the fan in the bottom of the power supply is actually an intake fan, so it will be exhausting air out the back.
