Default My dying 500W SmartPower 2.0

Yep, i'm pretty sure it's about to die. I've always seen my 12V rather high, and it didn't change.
What told me it was about to die? Just as I was browsing thru the TabMix+ menus my computer shut on me. I waited 15 seconds and tried to restart it. Nada. I unplugged the power and heard the power supply "shut down" as it was using it's last bit of power.
Instinct told me to check the 12V 4pin connecter, as I added an extension I made myself. Only problem being that the connector was looser than the Antec 12V 4pin but nothing drastic, just not as tight.
Here's what I saw:
Click the image to open in full size.
A burned pin! On the yellow wire on top of that...

So I disconnected it and connected the 12V 4pin connector from the PSU directly to the board. Upon reconnecting the power supply to the wall, I heard something I never heard before from my computer (It's always up an running normaly). A faint "eeeeeeeeeeeee" noise coming from it. Again, nothing crazy but I got quite used to hear this noise from power supplies that were about to die. Tomorrow i'm going to pickup my power supply tester (from Antec) at work and check it. I'm pretty sure the 12V will be orange or red, which indicates a faulty state.

I don't want to brag or anything, but up to now the various wiring jobs i've done have been A1. I'm not striking out cheap wiring from my end... but meh it would honestly surprised me, how could I miss a 4 wire (actually more like 8, since I took a 8 wire 4 pin 12V connector from something else) solder when i've done quite a few jobs on bios legs...

I have nothing against RMA'ing a power supply to Antec, but there's no advance replacement or such available, at least not in Canada. So yeah bottom line being I will probably end up another power supply instead of waiting for my RMA, because it takes up to a month. =/

Just wanted to share my december 13th adventure with you guys. What a great surprised to happen on my mom's birthday. :P

Any recommendation for a power supply? The rig is in my sig. I'd like something modular if possible but I'm not sure I want a SmartPower 2.0 anymore.

Man....I love, and have never had an issue with ANTEC. That being said....Enermax, Fortron/Sparkle, OCZ, and Corsair are the hot PSUs right now.......take your pick

ASUS P5E3 Premium
4GB DDR3-1600
Sapphire HD 3870X2
Danger Den Tower-26 (Custom W/C)

Hey I always liked Antec too, but you wouldn't believe the number of RMA's I have to do for SmartPower's. Some are barely a month old!
The sad thing about alot of power supply brands you just named is that I can't have them because they're not readily available in Eastern Canada. That or you have to pay a premium because one person over Quebec carries one. :S

For instance, an OCZ GameXStream 600W goes for $169.99 CAD at retail price (in small computer shops). Big ones buy ALL of them an try to sell them at an even higher price...
Add the taxes to that (6% then 7.5%) and it makes roughly $195. It's hard for alot of people to justify a $200.00 spending for a 600W quad 12V rail 18A half the price for the US, even for me. =/
Buying from an online vendor you can get it for $125.00, but Canada Post being what it is you must wait a full week (business days) or pay a ridiculous amount to receive it within 3 days, MAYBE.

Anyway, enough whining. In the end i'll probably end up ordering online even if i'm in the domain (lol) since it will be cheaper. Something like the
700W GameXStream will come by at $150.00 CAD which is by far less ridiculous. No cable management, but a solid power supply reading from most reviews and the warranty is great.

That would be my choice for a new PSU too. Otherwise, I'm guessing Seasonic falls into that category of hard to get and overpriced. And really, their modular units are overpriced here in the states, but it'd be between them or Corsair if I was going modular, or the Enermax Liberty series.

What about the hyper modular? I like the looks and I cant remember who has one on the board but I would like to know how its working out for them.

I would rather read a NewEgg review than a [H] review
