Default Anyone ever have a problem with PC Power and Cooling?

Everyone rants about how great their PSUs are, even if they are overpriced. Has anyone EVER had a problem, or are they just that great? I overclocked my system, have a beast to begin with, and am not coming close to pushing this PSU at all... I told my friends as justification for spending $450 on a PSU: This thing will last ten years. Barring any standards changes or huge increases in power consumption (that cannot be made up for with one of those 5.25" bay PSUs), I'm set for quite a while with this monster.

Thoughts?

I've never owned a PC P&C unit, but I can agree with you that saving for a more reliable power supply is a very worthwhile investment. However, $450 might be a little bit (or alot) of a stretch for most people to justify (including myself).

DX11 cards = PSU rape...boo. It would still be good for a server though...rock solid rails, no flux. No bull. Just power.

~gvblake: the system in my sig plus its monitor cost around $3500 when I bought it :) It was a suprise splurge that resulted from a large inheritance and $3k (after taxes) of summer job money

I don't know how to put this, but, I'm kind of a big deal.

PC Power & Cooling are great units for those that can justify the cost, but the problem is the cost itself (for most of us, anyway). You gotta realize that even assuming it does last 10 years, the demands of systems a decade from now will very likely render all of today's PSU's obsolete, whether you spent $100 on a high end OCZ/Fortron, or $450 on an uber PCP&P. Imagine trying to run today's systems with a high end PSU purchased back in 1996!

Or maybe the industry will surprise us and power demands will become more modest in the coming years, and today's SATA and PCI-E connectors will still be applicable. Time will tell. Again though, they're FANTASTIC units, they're just very difficult to recommend when competitors have compelling options for a fraction of the cost. OCZ's GameXStream 700w can be had for $115 after $25 MIR, and it's certified by nVidia for quad-SLI. You could pick up roughly four of them and be in the same price range as a single 850w or 1KW PCP&P.

Not saying otherwise. I like to think buying a good PSU is a good idea, but on the other hand I change components so often it's not worth paying much more than ~$120.00, which is quite more than most users actually.
(At least it's quite more than most users that and buy parts from where I work. =P Wouldn't know for the rest of the world.)

I kindof agree with that, but not the way you worded it. You can't possibly have any idea what DirectX 11 will require (or if it will even exist).
But yes, a lot can change in 10 years. Just look at the past 3 years!
  • CD > DVD
  • AGP > PCI-Express
  • PCI > PCI-Express
  • DDR > DDR2
  • Single core CPU > Dual core CPU
  • ATX 12v > ATX12v 2.0 (24-pn ATX power, 8-Pin EPS power, multiple 12v rails, 6-pin PCI-Express power, 4-pin 12v ATX CPU power, active PFC, RoHS standards, etc)
  • PATA > SATA > SATA II
  • Horizontal HDD recording > Perpendicular recording

Yeah, what is important is that people got the point.
Things change and I think we all know computer technology changes even faster.

Paul has the right approach.....PC Power and Cooling makes great PSUs, but at what point do they become overkill? You can get an ANTEC, Thermaltake, Fortron, Sparkle, OCZ, or Corsair PSU for a fraction of the cost.....and any one of those will power any current system perfectly fine.

yeah, but if you plan on OC'ing hardcore, you need a steady, reliable power source. Some of those cheaper models can fluctuate enough to kill your OC. I'm pretty sure I'm exceeding my wattage limit on my PPC 510w PSU but I'm still cranking out 2889Mhz on my Opty 170 and the GX2 Oc'd an extra 100Mhz as well. They are SOLID quality PSU's.
