Default Antec SP-500 problems

I purchased this PSU Last year and was waiting to install it when the other one quit working. And guess what not only will it not work but it will not do anything at all. Installed it new out of the box and it will not power up. I plugged it into the motherboard with nothing else and it still will not power up. I tried it on two different motherboards with the same result. The led comes on, on the motherboards but they will not post. They are both 20 pin boards. One was a Abit IC7 and the other is a Asus P4S800. I also trie jumping the pins on the motherboard cable and it still will not power up or spin the fans. I hope some of you can help me trouble shoot it.

Thanks in advance
Red50sr

I should have know better than to purchase one for a spare but it was a great deal so I went ahead and purchased it.

Just to clarify, when you say you jumped the pins on the motherboard cable, you mean that you used a piece of wire or paperclip (or something electrically conductive) to connect the green wire and a black wire on the PSU's 24-pin connector? If you did this (and made sure the PSU was plugged into a working wall socket and the power switch was flipped on on the PSU) and the PSU fan did not spin up then you probably have a bad power supply. With the PSU jumpered like I just described, you can also try connecting a fan or optical drive to the power cables of the PSU and see if those turn on. If not, then you definitely have a bad PSU. Try contacting Antec to see about getting the product replaced.

Yes you are right, I used a paper clip.I also used a meter to check if it was putting out any power at all and there was none. I have contacted Antec and I am waiting for a response. I was wondering if there is an internal fuse inside the box? If I find out they will not replace it I will break it open and see.

Thanks for your response

Be very careful opening up the PSU as the capacitors in there can store a very major charge. I wouldn't go tinkering in there unless you REALLY know what you are doing. I don't know much about the specific internals of a PSU and you will never catch me in there touching stuff in there!

You can check out this review of the Antec SmartPower 500W PSU, they took some pictures of the inside that might satisfy your curiosity...

I would just try your best to get it replaced through Antec though before you try anything yourself. Even if Antec won't cover it under warranty, PLEASE take extreme care in poking around inside your PSU.

Well, if the LED on the motherboard comes on, then the PSU must be doing something...

I have seen one or two with a fuse. That was a while back. HOWEVER, the fuse was accessible from the outside under a cap. No reason to open it up. If there is not a cap of some kind on the outside of the psu where a fuse could reside, then there is not a fuse on the inside.
