| Back when they PS2 came out, we had one computer that was loaded with PC/games. It was a nightmare to keep it running. We had everything installed on it from the $5 specials to Eliteforce II. I got so tired of chasing conflicts in that system that I bought a PS2 and made a rule....no more games on the computer. That strategy worked pretty well for a long time. We upgaded to the new model of the PS2 and gathered quite a collection of games. They all worked and didn't conflict with each other and I didn't have to spend hours doing updates and reinstalling operating systems. That last model of the PS2 cost me $139. That included the integrated network adapter. It has all worked perfectly for about 4 years. Then I saw the xbox come out and I thought ....gee.....that isn't a game console anymore....it is a computer....with a computers price tag. I have no idea what they are like to support. Now I see the PS3 is finally going to be out in November and there will be a $499 and $599 model. It is so nice of SONY to make a cheaper one for those of us who can't afford the top end one...DONT YOU THINK?>?? So now we have computers with games still and we have computers pretending to be game consoles. In reality they are taking a page from the proprietary Compaq systems of days gone by. It will be a cold day in you know where when I spend $499 for a game console. I think it is time to admit that they missed the boat before it even sales. And it is time for me to rethink my game strategy. $139 was a good deal for a great product. $499 and $599 is ridiculous...not matter how good it is. Somebody out there will figure it out and build a game console that is a game console with a game consoles price. Who will it be? Commodore 64 overclocked into outerspace ![]() | ||||||||||||||

| I agree, the price of the PS3 is totally outragious and I will never pay more than $200 for a quality game console. Especially since I never use the things (except for those classic games that we just can't get enough of). So yeah, I'm with ya on this one jph. That is just too much, but the sad part is that there will still be PLENTY of people who drop the bomb and pay full price for one of these suckers. I much prefer computer gaming myself, so I'll stick with that... | ||||||||||||||

| The Final Word
| yep, basic supply and demand....like a new Core 2 Duo or AMD X2 processor....they can charge whatever they want....because someone will pay to be the first, fastest, best.......once the neweness wears off and availability grows, the prices will become much more reasonable. | Like when the PS2 was first release it cost £230 over in the UK ($300 or around that area) for the first year, then it dropped to £140 ($200) so the PS3 will be expensive just like any other console and then drop in price, but the reason its so expensive is because sony know what their doing with a games console, its 5x Faster and better than an Xbox360 and around 15x faster than a Wii, its absolutly incredible in what it can do and thats why its so expensive a the moment. if i were you guys. i'd spare the stupidity of getting a Wii just because its cheap and just wait a while till the ps3 comes down in price, you'll not regret the wait. | ||||||||||||||

| PS2 Price and sales History 10/26/2000 US$299.99 LAUNCH 05/14/2002 US$199.99 30 Million 05/13/2003 US$179.99 50 Million (Jan 2003) 05/11/2004 US$149.99 70 Million 04/20/2006 US$129.99 100 Million (Nov. 2005) Even if Sony follows this model, the $600 PS3 will still be $400 after a year and a half. That is assuming that they follow the same model from the PS2. I doubt that the price will come down that much and even if it does, it will still be much to expensive for a game console. | The time has come for Revenge of the Nerds!
| It's true that the prices will eventually fall, but get comfy waiting. Heck, it'll probably be a good 3-4+ months after launch until you're afforded the luxury of just paying retail price, as opposed to the 200% markups on EBay. I'd like to get the kids a Nintendo Wii for Christmas, but like every console release these days, even the preorders sell out within minutes. I <3 PC gaming. | ||||||||||||||
