Default Hellgate: London

Anyone played this game? Just wondering what people thought of it. I've been playing Titan Quest quite a bit, but it's getting rather repetitious and was looking for something new...

I haven't played it but talked to some that have, including a coworker. From what I understand, it is a bloody Source based game that gets old after a few weeks.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

My opinions are my own and not representative of this site or its members.

Hmmm, that's sortof what most of the reviews are saying too.
Guess I'll have to sit this one out. Anyone else have an opinion on this game?

I have a LOT of mixed opinions about this game. Here goes the laundry list:
First of all, on my desktop (q6600, 8800gtx, 2gb 1066mhz ram) it still, at times, lags terribly (even on the lowest detail settings, but considerably less). This is beeng the only game to ever lag on this computer. Don't know why. I'm only running DX 9.0c though.
The old Diablo I/II team made it, so it's going to have a lot of the same feel. It looks / feels great. You have the option of being first or third person. It's a bit more action packed than most rpg's; a lot can happen in a short amount of time. The story so far is kind of cliche so far, but that's never really bad (I haven't beaten it yet, so I don't know the whole story). I'd say that the gameplay (as far as I know) is quite unique. It plays a lot like Ubisoft's Prince of Persia trilogy as far as the aiming and running around goes. It's a game made by gamers for gamers; it has its fair load of comedy in dialogue, easter egg type insinuations (there's one guy that's a direct incarnation of William Shatner (sp?) in his Captian Kirk style, Mike Rowe is referenced, etc.), and whatnot. A lot of the levels look the same; the maps are indeed different, but the same graphics are used over and over again. The skill tree looks almost exactly like Titan Quest. You have one page with about 20 skills on it -- top ones lead to the lower ones. The gameplay combined with the odd assortment of skills leads to many different styles of gameplay. The game is intended for the hardcore gamers along with the green ones, so the game is really only as technical as one makes it. I haven't done a lot of item farming on Hellgate, but it closely resembles TQ and DII, and the game also supports the typical "Normal, Exceptional, Elite" style of equipment. All of the equipment shows up on your character, even the belt ^^ (which I thought was really cool). THERE IS NO LAN PLAY!!! ='(.

Sorry about the streaming thought, and I'll add more stuff if I can think of it. If you have any specific questions, I can do my best to answer them.

Overall, the game is quite nice and easy going. The graphics are quite pretty too.
Hellgate > Titan Quest.

EDIT: I have to admit though, it did get pretty old somewhat quickly. Isn't nearly as addictive as Diablo II.

Well if that's the case, then I might not have to shut this game out quite yet. Titan Quest has been a source of entertainment for quite some time now, but I'm looking for something new and different from a similar game genre.

And there's no LAN gameplay you say?! That's really lame as I do play Titan Quest on a LAN sometimes and it would be annoying without such a feature.

I guess my question to you Noctis is this: Is it worth $45 or should I wait for it to hit the bargain bin?

That's a hard one. I didn't go out and buy it. I'm actually borrowing it from someone to try it out. My girlfriend and I were debating purchasing it for multiplayer, but we've both kind of put the game down for now. It's fun and all, but in my opinion, I wouldn't spend the money on it. It wasn't quite that good; but again, I'm kind a stickler about spending money. It probably won't hit the bargain bin for a long time. Have you ever played Diablo II? Did you like it?

Edit: I also have to admit that my opinion is a little biased against TQ. I found that TQ was solely a knock off, but HG definitely has its own feel to it. I'd say that it's worth it in the sense that it's a new type of RPG to try out. I think that, at this point, it would have been kind of a waste of money if I had payed for it. I haven't reached the end of the game though, so it might turn up in the end.

It's not a terrible game, don't get me wrong. =\. AH HAH! Download the DEMO!!! (or at any other site you want). It's a fair representation of what the game is.

Good call on the demo, I didn't realize there was one available. I have not payed Diablo II, only Titan Quest. I bought the Immortal Throne expansion pack too and it was worth the $20, but that's about the most I would pay for it. I tried playing Oblivion too, but that game is almost a little too involved for me, I'm not that hard core. I think I'm a fan of the hack and slash type RPG rather than the "epic" RPG games that try to create an entire living universe, almost makes the game too hard and almost like work, not play.

I actually play Titan Quest with my girlfriend too, it's a blast. Good to hear there are other cool gamer girls out there too!

I'll see if I can give the Demo a whirl tonight, thanks for the input Noctis!

No prob. I'd recommend Diablo II. Titan Quest is a direct knock off. The designers admit it ^^. Titan Quest's graphics are a little bit better, though. My girlfriend and I actually spent a bit of time on TQ too. We had a good ol' time LAN playing. I made it as far as Typhon, item farmed on him for about a week straight, got a few item sets, and quit. *shrugs* It was fun while it lasted. Didn't go real far on the second difficulty.

Oblivion got really old for me too. I never even advanced in the story. I ran out and became grandmaster of the Mage and Thief guild and grandmaster with the bow and quit. Got old.
