Default Getting/got a PS3?

Anyone here have a PS3?

If so, I hope it's living up to your expectations.
Hope you will consider using it to fold for the HL folding team once Stanford releases the folding client

The PS3 still hasn't reached U.K shores, due in a few weeks.
Is it worth the steep asking price in your opinion?

It depends really, if the standford folding client uses all the SPEs, then it would probably be worth it, but if it only uses the main primary PPC core, like the current version of linux for it, you'd be better off getting a computer. But for gaming, the PS3 is meh IMO, and sony is removing the emotion engine, which will limit backwards compatibility.

Like I said though, if the client uses all the cores, then it would be worth it, if it doesn't , then just get an allendale, or Barcelona when they come out

Nope. Why pay $800 dollars for a console that will be replaced by another in 4-5 years? Basically, it's just a money sink in my opinion. By the time you buy all the controllers, games, memory packs and accessories that go along with a PS3 or any other 'new' console, you could have built yourself a pretty decent gaming system that will outperform any console on the market today or in the future.

Besides, when the PS4 comes out, I guarantee you that it won't be going for no $600 or $800 dollars. When the PS4 is released, I wager it will probably fetch close to $1,200 dollars. Why? Look at the PS2. When it was released, you could buy it for $400. The PS3? $800 dollars. Keeping in mind this trend line, one doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to know that the price for the next console will surely double from the console before it.

The PS2 never went for $400, it started at 300 (Unless you were in Canada or Aussy). Also, the PS3 sits at $600 for the premium, not 800. For good reason to. Besides offering graphics on par with todays gaming rigs, it does so for easily $400 less then a good system. Also, it has a BluRay disk drive. Thats Bluuuuuuuuu Raaaaaayyy. As in, you would have to spend about $600 MORE just to get your PC to play the disk. Even building the most basic of basic PCs with a BluRay drive would cost around $1000, and you wouldn't be able to game with it.

The PS2 to the PS3 Basic is $200 more ($300 to $500) which is a step price raise, but it should be noted that the Nintendo Game Cube to the Wii is a mere $50, and the XBox to the Basic 360 system is $0. 0 x 2 still equals... 0 :D based off that, the prices can be assumed as:
PS4 Basic $700
Nintendo Wii Wii $300
XBox 720 $300

I'm afraid that hardware price tracking just doesn't work on trends of the past.

All that said, I still don't think it is a good deal, mainly because the 360 Premium is $100 cheaper then the PS3 basic, and they perform pretty much identical (even with the PS3s notable higher system hardware).

Yes, it may now, but when it was first released it was commanding an $800 dollar price tag. That's street price, too. As in, stores like Best Buy and Circuit City were charging that amount for their PS3 consoles. In any case, the hubub of the PS3 has died down considerably, and so has its price.

Blu Ray? Starting price of $600 just to buy it? There's an interesting review in the April 2007 issue of MPC. On page 62 they do a good job giving a synopsis of the cost of owning a Blu Ray drive, where the cost has steadily been declining. Again, when taken into perspective a la PS3, the hubub of the Blu Ray drive has died down considerably, and as with the PS3, so has its price.

I would say that within the next 6-8 months, owning a Blu Ray drive will cost no more than $300 to $350 dollars. A price that is easily paid (and within budget) when building a system that outperforms any console on the market today.

That I have to disagree with, epically if you are once again going to use the declining price argument and not place it on the other end as well. PS3s will also decline (rumor is $100 within the next few months). I defy anyone to build a computer that can play BluRay disk and game as well as a PS3 for $400 (expected price of a PS3 basic), or basically, $100 for every component combined, then a BluRay drive. It just can't be done. A DECENT gaming rig would cost about $600, and it would be able to keep up with a PS3, a good rig would ring about $1000 (as my currently does, and I happen to consider it good :D) and still not be able to play BluRay.
