Thumbs down Gears of War

I received Gears of War for Christmas. I thought yay, that looks like a fun game, so I proceeded to install it today. Well 4 1/2 hours later, I still have a crashing to desktop game. I updated the drivers for everything! My v/c, my soundcard, new bios, new driver for my processor, most recent patch for the game itself. Verdict: this game is a piece of shit and if I can convince bestbuy to take it back opened I am going to get rid of it and never buy another microsoft studios game again. I have looked up this problem and it seems that I am not the only one with problems with this game. So I give Gears of War the big MIDDLE FINGER!

If you have Vista, try setting compatibility to Windows XP.

I saw that disabling sound effects, and enable v-sync may help things. I'm not sure why that would happen, since it is still based on the Unreal 3 engine.

My uncle had problems with his crashing to desktop as well. He had just purchased a new Dell XPS system Q6700 and it would crash everytime. I tried updating all his drivers and nothing worked.

Sux cause I really really wanted this game. It ROCKS for Xbox.

I have xp. There is problems with both os's. Something to do with windows live screwing things up. The bad part of it all is you cant play the game without windows live or it wont save your progress!

MS Studios seems to have taken the EA approach with their 360-to-PC titles: "Hey guys! I got a sweet idea: Let's develop this potentially awesome and amazing game, then hype it up a bunch prior to its release. Next, we release it (finally) and then NEVER support it again! Oh what fun! That should really piss off the consumer market!"

The BF series is honestly some of the best looking stuff in the FPS genre, but I'll be damned if they're not the most unstable, buggy and unrefined games out there. I really hope MS doesn't make that turn.

On the flip-side: I got Mass Effect from my wife for Christmas, and it's a MS Studios title. It's the most amazing game I've ever played. Period. They really do an amazing job for the 360-only games for sure. I think I'll give 90% of the kudos to BioWare though lol.
