Default Eve Online

I've been looking for a new addiction and I've herd lots of people talking about Eve Online. I just signed up for a 14 day trial but honestly, I have no idea what I'm getting into. As far as I can tell, its a huge space trade MMO. I think I recall an old thread about it and we had a few members who played so could anyone shed some light on the game for me?

Asus P5N32-SLI SE Delux
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
XFX Nvidia GeForce 7900GT
OCZ Gold 1Gig (2x512) PC2 6400
Ultra Aluminum Blue Full Tower ATX Case
Ultra Connect X 2 Wire Modular 550w PSU

I played it for about a month. It's an extremely complex and deep MMO. Lot's of things to do and see. I found it to be fun and the graphics are pretty decent; the way space is modeled looks fantastic. I think you'll like it, but just be warned that there is a steep learning curve.

Thats fine with me, I find most MMOs I've tried to be annoyingly simplistic thus far anyways. I'm DLing it right now but it looks like its going to be a few hours.

EDIT: I also read their is an issue with the newest patch possibly nuking my boot.ini file. I apparently could be affected since my Windows copy is on my D drive instead of my C as it should of been when I installed it. Has the issue been fixed?

This is one of the reasons I stopped playing WoW to be honest.

Oh man, you got me there. I really don't know. I haven't played EO since, hell, the beginning of this year.

The issues are not even an issue if you install Eve to a drive other than your boot drive. You can read more about it here. If you're running Vista or Linux, it isn't an issue period.

I've played Eve Online since October 2004. I still do. There is a steep learning curve, but it's a very enjoyable one. I'm not aware of any other game where you can interact with any of the 30K+ players online, at any given moment in any given location. PvP isn't consensual, you can and will be ganked in the lower security areas. The best advice I can give you is to link up with a **** corporation quickly. Don't go for one of those 5 man corporations. Get yourself into a large, organized one in a hurry. You start off in a large corporation, and you may find that the "beginners" corp will give you all the info you need. Once you get the basics out of the way, look me up in game. I go by Quakindude. But go through the tutorials. It will save you from asking too many questions about the basic stuff.

Once you develop your character a little bit, the sky is the limit. There's politics/diplomacy, mission running, goal oriented tasks like helping maintain Player Owned Stations, mining (this activity is a swear word in my Toon's life), Player Vs. Player (PvP) and Player vs. Electronic (PvE) confrontations, wars being fought, you can be a researcher, ship builder, component builder, pirate, good guy and the list goes on.

I personally am a PvP guy. All of my skill training has been combat oriented.

I am one that refuses to play any game where I have to pay a monthly fee. I am of the belief that games that are played online should be handled like CS:S... someone or a group pays for a server and people should be able to play on it when they want. I understand for some games this is tough to do but I am sure it is very possible in this case to allow server owners to be assigned or choose a "quadrant" or whatever. this way you have a home base area that you can sleep at without the chance of being attacked and losing everything.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

No, that won't work and for many reasons. Not everyone keeps their server up and running all the time.

You can have all of your stuff very safe and sound in any number of ways. Just because you get attacked doesn't mean you lose everything. Not at all. By living in low security areas, you can lose more than you typically would living in .3 security and above, but that's the chances of the game. You don't HAVE to live in 0.0 space. You can live anywhere you want in Empire space and never lose more than the ship you're flying.

Even then, if in high security space, .5 and above, if you attack someone or are attacked, the local "police" force shows up and jacks your shit up quick. The higher the security, all the way to 1.0 space, the faster and more aggressive the response.

This is a persistent gaming environment. I've seen upwards of 35K people playing at the same time, in the same universe. Having individual "servers" wouldn't work in this case. Too many drop off and there goes the system you were flying through.

For me, as long as the content is their, I don't mind paying a monthly fee.

I got it up and running this morning and went through my tutorial agent missions. I also looked up a mining guide since that seems to be a decent way to make some ISK at such a low level. My first goal is to get a better ship. I had to go through the create a character a few times just to see exactly what I would be getting myself into. Most of my points went in Intelligence and Memory so engineering looks like the way to eventual go for me.
