Default BF2 problem - Verifying Client Data screen stalling

I've got a friend who has a peculiar problem. When he starts up BF2 via GameSpy, and loads into a server, his game stalls for 10-15 minutes when the loadup hits the 'Verifying client data' screen. This then usually locks his computer up, or is forced to hit his ESC key to get out of it.

Couple of things:

- He is using the latest version of DirectX
- He is using an up-to-date version of WindowsXP SP2
- He uses ZoneAlarm for his firewall, and its ports are open as well as rules assigned to allow BF2 connectivity
- He has 4GB of Crucial DDR400 PC3200 RAM
- He is using an AMD64 FX-55
- He is using an ASUS A8NE mobo
- He has an nVidia 6800 Ultra PCI-e
- He has installed and reinstalled BF2 several times
- His video drivers are up to date (installed and reinstalled those)
- He has made sure that PunkBuster is up to date
- His internet connection (wireless) is not causing the problem
- His video and audio settings have been turned down to help with load times
- He has contacted EA support several times to no avail
- He has this same problem on a different, lower spec'd desktop

The only thing that I can think of that could be causing this problem is that on both machines he uses GameSpy to start his games like HalfLife2, FEAR, Counterstrike and BF2. He has ensured that his videocards are in working order by swapping them out on separate machines. If anyone has any suggestions or insight into this problem, I would appreciate any help.

He is going to try totally uninstalling BF2 and GameSpy, then reinstall the game without it and see if that works.

Any thoughts you guys?

My though is to give up on the game and play something else. I had nothing but problems with BF2 and think its a buggy POS that EA rushed to market (Like they did with CandC a few years back)
I gave up and have been healthier and happier ever since!!!

Has he installed patch 1.21? I was having a similar problem before I installed this latest patch. Be sure to restart after install.

As far as I know yes. His connectivity to the internet is solid with any other game he plays: CS, HL2, CS etc. etc. including the internet, Bit Torrent and Opera.

Aye.

He thinks that he may have found the problem. He was using four, 1GB sticks of Crucial DDR400 PC3200 memory. These sticks were bought individually, not as kits. Could this be attributed to his BF2 problem?
