Default 64bit OS's and game performance

I'm looking to do a dual boot of XP pro 64bit, and Vista ultimate 64bit, and was wondering if using a 64bit OS would have a negative impact on my FPS. I'm also going to upgrade to 4gb of RAM BTW.
any and all help appreciated.

I haven't seen any difference running Vista 64 bit.

isn't 64 bit supposed to be incompatible with a lot of games?

ATI Radeon HD 3870 x2
Seagate 250 GB x2 in Raid 0
2GB DDR3-1800 RAM

You will lose some FPS from XP to Vista. But AFAIK, you won't see a real difference from 32-bit to 64-bit.

I jumped to 4gb and Vista Ultimate 64-bit from 1gb on Windows XP Pro 32-bit last week. I was worried that there would be a loss of in performance but I'll tell you now, if there was one, it's really small. Everything runs really smooth.

shouldn't there have been an extremely large gain in performance, going from 1 gb of ram to 4?

Depends on the application he was running. Most games won't see a noticeable FPS increase by increasing ram when you've already got 1GB or more. 1GB to 2GB may give you a small boost in newer games, but the place you'll see the biggest performance increase with more ram is a better running OS in general and much faster video/picture editing software. Photoshop is notorious for wanting every bit of ram under 4GB that you can throw at it.

Quakindude always seems to hit the nail on the head. 4GB really helps in Vista because of Superfetch. Programs launch almost instantaneously (damn, spelled that word right on the first try).

I actually say a noticeable increase in system responsiveness and decrease in boot and shutdown time going from my old 1GB Corsair RAM to my new G.Skill 2GB.
