Default wonky thermal sensor

My friend's E6420 is getting wonky temps. Thermal sensor is not operating correctly. Need a fix for this, thanks.

First thing to do would be to update to the most recent BIOS and search google to see if it's a common problem.

Also, please tell us what motherboard from Gigabyte he is using, maybe someone heard about this issue and could help you promptly. :)

he is using the Gigabyte 965P-DS3 Rev. 3.3 motherboard. What is the newest BIOS revision for this mobo?

Version F11 released on 2007/04/26.
GIGABYTE - Support - Motherboard - BIOS

Check the version of the BIOS when the computer boots. :)

Also what programs have you checked the temps with? I would test with ITAT and see what numbers it gives.

If a BIOS update doesn't fix it, and I'm not totally inclined to think it will, the CPU has a faulty diode built into the die. Unless you have a machine and robotics that can work on the nano level, your buddy needs to RMA his CPU.

I've never had this problem, but I've heard of it before. An RMA for the CPU was the only way to fix it.

On stock cooling, with no overclock, that CPU should idle around 32*C in a 21*C environment. 40*C +/- 2* for a 27*C room.

Figure a 10*C +/- 2*C delta for any given environment for stock cooling and clocks. That's a generalization, and based solely on my personal experience. Just know this, it is impossible to cool a CPU below the room temperature on air or water. Unless you have some type of freezer for the water anyway.

Alright, haven't tried a BIOS update yet but I will. Thanks for the advice, Quakin'.

Make sure you are checking ALL the diodes readings. The Core2 has three diodes that report temperature, one on each core and one on the heat spreader.

The reason I suggest the use of ITAT is that it does not read from the BIOS but straight from the diodes. I could be wrong on this but I thought this is what an Intel rep had told me.

how do you know it is reading wonky? could it be that it is just reading the wrong sensor which is in a different part of the processor thus giving the wrong temp?
Many times Speedfan gives you several temps and if one says 60șC at idle that is likely not the right sensor even though it may say CPU.

Thanks HL and Corsair!
