What's up with my cpu temp?

i'm using nvidia monitor to keep an eye on my cpu / gpu temps and they've recently seemed a bit high even when i've got nothing going on. i took off the side panel and watched my cpu temp take a dive. here's a couple of screens before and after i take off the side panel.

With side panel on:

it might be hard to see but what it says is that with my side panel on my temps are:

cpu - 47
sys - 46
gpu - 74

and after taking off the panel, i get a drastic drop in cpu temp:

cpu - 28
sys - 44
gpu - 70

now i know nvidia monitor probably isn't the best program to use for cpu temps but intel tat doesn't work for me. but either way, a 19 degree drop off doesn't seem right to me.

i've got a 120 pulling air in the front of the case with an 80 blowing air out the top and the zalman 110 pushing air out to two 80's blowing out the rear of the case.

i'm thinking that i'm probably not pulling enough air into the case. or maybe i need a faster 120 fan in the front. any suggestions?

You've got an awesome system....maybe a little too much for that case.
you might look ti upgrade the case to something with better airflow, like the ANTEC Nine Hundred. you could also mod your case to add a 120mm fan to the side panel.

You can post a pic of your case and that would be a better description. There is an obvious air flow issue with your system. Adding a "bigger" top blow hole and or side would greatly help. With that system it seems money is not your first priority, even the pricey CM Stacker would be a good choice for ultimate cooling solution. That or go liquid cooled.

Almost forgot, make sure wire managment is in play. That is the #1 killer in airflow designs.

After looking at that case, assuming its the one in your sig....Have you tried to switch your 2 rear fans to blow in instead of pulling out? This tip saved alot of temps in the antec/chieftech clone cases that had those dual 80's in the rear.

Still looking at that case, the top blow hole is very restricted with that grid over the fan....pretty much worthless if you ask me. Open that up with a bigger fan or just cut out that grid and use a less restrictive grill.

With all of your other temps remaining nearly the same, I'd check to make sure no one has turned the fan speed control down on your CPU cooler. If you didn't install that controller, then check your 9700 for dust build up.

Now if you've just built this computer, like in the last couple weeks, dust shouldn't be an issue and as mentioned, airflow is the problem.

I agree with Lokie and Capper. If you like your case you can alway just mod it so it has better airflow. The TJ-03 is a damn nice looking case. Here are some suggestions.



First thing I would do is cut a hole in that door so that 120mm Fan can suck more air into your case. Then add a nice fan grill to cover up that hole.


Then Cut this fan hole so you can fit a 120mm fan here, then add a Fan Grill that matches Your front one.



Last but not least Cut a Fan Hole in the side for another 120mm Fan, and Add another Fan Grill that matches the front and top.

With those 3 small mods, you should see an improvement in Airflow, also make sure you have nice tidy cable management like Lokie said.

Water cooling is unnecessary these days... Basically if you want to run money just for the giddy feeling.

I agree with Hitman. You should definitely mod up the case.

thanks for the advice everybody. as much as i like some of the new cases that have come out recently, i still love the tj-03. i'm going to try to hold on to it and make it work for as long as i can.

i attached the zalman 9700 to my fan controller and cranked it up. temp dropped anywhere from 8 - 10 degrees depending on the time of day. noise level raised a bit but the computer is still quiet overall. next i'll change the airflow of the top fan from out to in, and see if that has any effect.
