Default Thermaltake Silent Boost RX K8 Heatsink/Fan

Paul takes an up close look at Thermaltake's Silent Boost RX K8 Heatsink/Fan
Quote:
With computer processors continuing to get faster and more complex, the quest for a quiet computing experience remains a 'hot' topic. AMD's new dual-core X2 heatsinks do a terrific job at keeping those temps in check, but they're not particularly easy on the ears. This begs the question, is it possible to have your cake and eat it too? Thermaltake certainly thinks so and they've joined the party by attempting to serve up a slice of noiseless performance with their new Silent Boost Rx K8 heatsink/fan.

Very nice. This is the first time I've seen a review on this product. I've seen it in the storefronts of e-tailers, but never a review; so this was a good read. Looks like it does a decent job at such low dB rating (only 18dB). But it seems that the Arctic Cooling Freezer64 pro has it out done by a little bit. It's suprising to see how well the stock AMD cooler cools at full load, but then again, it is really loud...

I'm looking to build a small form factor case in the near future and I'm on the hunt for a nice low noise, low profile cooler. I'll have to keep this in mind.

Do you know what bearing type that Tt fan is on the Silent Boost? Thermaltake usually uses sleave bearings in their quiet fans and my experience with sleeve bearings is that they are great for a little while, but soon develop a high pitched whine at full speed and have to be turned down at the bearing wears out.

They have the RX K7 listed as a ball bearing, so I imagine the same would be true of the RX K8 (LINK and scroll down):

It's really remarkable what AMD has done, though they're making me look like a harda** in these comparative reviews! ;)

****!

Did you see the new coolers that are being included in the dual core AMD Processors?!!! (X2 and Opteron).

According to a madshrimps review... it rivals an xp-90!!!! Capper, if you have one on hand, definately review it!

This is the cooler with heatpipes and is kind of offset.

I don't know that it rivals an XP-90C.... but it is the best stock cooling solution I've ever seen. Its a little loud at higher speeds, but it does cool very well.

i'm surprised they give it out as a stock cooler. The thing should be relatively expensive if you know what i mean.

Considering what it actually costs to producs a CPU, and the profit margin on them.......no, the cooling solution should not cost more. I think its a companies responsibility to put out a quality product, which is why Intel should be embarrassed with some of the cooling solutions they've released with their processors
