Default The Scythe Katana 2 CPU Cooler

Scythe Co., Ltd. began in Japan in 2002, eventually moving forward and landing in the U.S. in 2004. They set their sights on the Do-It -ourself (DIY) crowd, striving to pump out high performing coolers that are also extremely quiet. As a new dog on the street back then, they introduced the Kamikaze CPU Cooler that earned them geek-cred in the cooling community. Jump to today, and they are clearly no longer one of the new dogs. Since the Kamikaze, they have been produced many quiet coolers that have respectable thermal cooling performance.

Not bad for a $30 cooler, especially considering that it performed about on par at comparable noise levels. I've heard a lot of good things about those Scythe fans. Thanks for the review Matt!!

Yes nice work! Just out of curiousity... how do you select which hardware to review? Like what if there is something I'd like reviewed (scythe andy samerai for example )? I imagin you don't just go out and buy the hardware just to review it.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+@3.16Ghz 1.4v
Gigabyte GA-M61P-S3
Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800 @904Mhz 5-5-5-15 2.2v
XFX 7900GS@550Mhz core 870Mhz memory
Corsair HX520 PSU
X-Fi Xtreme Gamer sound card
Cooler Master RC-690
Stock HSF
Accelero S1+Turbo Module

Rich (site owner) and myself communicate with reps from just about every company you can think of. Sometimes they'll request a product review on a new release, other times we poke and prod. We usually don't purchase hardware outright for review, though there are exceptions, particularly processors.

That's the quick and dirty answer. There's actually quite a bit that goes on behind the scenes when it comes to running a review site, and is a topic I plan to blog about in the not too distant future.

If you happen to buy some new hardware though, feel free to do a write-up on it. Obviously we can't review everything thats new and like Paul said processors are hard to come by. Personally I write like a 2 year old on crack so they pretty much keep me locked up in my room and feed me news to keep me out of trouble.

Yeah this is not a bad all-around cooler. You know, if you are looking at getting a reasonably priced cooler that focuses on low noise levels, at all times, then this is a nice one. It's just not for someone that cares less about noise levels while expecting very good air cooling. In that case, they need to look beyond the Katana 2 and expect to spend almost twice as much.
