Default Need some input

I've been playing around with my PC (specs below) and am finding that I can only get it up to about 3.1 GHz before the temps become a little too high for my liking (67C) so I'm wondering if you guys have any suggestions on what fans I should add to my TT Shark to maybe improve the air flow. All I have is the stock TT Shark case with the GeminII. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What fan(s) do you have on your GeminII? What fans do you have installed into your Tt Shark right now? Are you willing to cut up your case for some slight case modifications (like cutting out the mesh fan grills over the fans or maybe even cutting another fan hole)?

Somethings not right with your temps. I take it those are 100% load on "Orthos" or another load program?

What program are you relying on for the temp readout? [Core temp is accurate]

What HS compound are you using? [Arctic Silver 5 is highly recommended.]

Do you have 2ea 120MM fans on the Gemini 2? [Yate loons work very well for mine ... even better than higher CFM fans due to the good air "pressure"]

What is your room ambient temps?

You should have at the minimum 1ea 120MM intake and 1ea Minimum 120MM exhaust.

If your system has all that or reasonably similar ... your temps are ~ 10 - 15 degrees C too high for full load.

Then perhaps your surfaces are not mated well on your CPU and Heatsink or perhaps your IHS isn't mated well internally or has a warped surface.

I modded my Gemini 2 but only gained 4 degrees C ... so just ad 4 degrees C to these temps... Idle = 33, 31, 29, 31 ... Load= 51, 49, 48, 50

Q6600@3.2GHZ w/2ea 120MM and 1ea 100mm intake and 1ea 120mm out and 2ea 120mm HS fans.

I'm using Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound, I have 2 Arctic Cooling AF12L 120mm Case fans on the GeminII and then the fans that come in the TT Shark (120mm front fan(intake) and 120mm blue LED rear fan(exhaust)). I might consider altering the case, but I'd prefer not to if I could help it. And yes I'm getting 67C at 3.09 MHz under full load.

Then it may be time to take it down a notch below 3GHz or look into water cooling

PkL728 ... What is the stepping of your Quad Core?

If it is Go Stepping something isn't right ... your temps are too high for some reason overlooked.

If it is not a G0 stepping you aren't that terribly over temp ... maybe 3-5 degrees C ... which might be remedied with a lapping job of both your heatsink and CPU and making sure your fans on the CPU are putting out enough speed.

Even with 70 F Ambient and given the 8800 might give you 3-4 degrees C warmer internals ... your temps should be below 60 C with a Go stepping CPU.

You can always try re-seating your heatsink with new TIM and see if that changes anything. You could also consider lapping the base of your heatsink. Or if you are feeling a little more adventerous, you could try lapping the top of the IHS on your processor.

Are you sure you have the fans blowing down through the GeminII (toward the processor)? You could also try blowing out your case, fans, and heatsinks to get rid of any dust buildup. Sometimes doing some cable management can help improve airflow inside the case and possibly decrease temperatures too.

if it is any help, my E6600 at stock 2.4GHz runs in the low 50s (ºC) with the Tt big typhoon but also an ambient room temp of 80-82ºF

It is B3 stepping I believe.. pretty sure it's not G0. What is lapping?

I think Yellowhello has a nice article on Lapping ... maybe he will give you the link ... or a search on the forums may produce it.

Lapping can get up to a 5 degree C temp drop. I have done it and got 5 degrees.
