Default My new video cooling

...is in ship mode right now!

I ordered from Newegg just yesterday, and it's already shipped, so I may have the stuff by the weekend (3 day shipping that cost nearly $15).

I ordered a Zalman VF1000, some OCZFreeze thermal compound, a set of the Artic-clean stuff, and just for shits and giggles I got a 140mm Thermaltake case fan to play around with for additional case cooling. I may use it to replace some other fan or fans.

I know some that have the 8/9 series cards with more RAM are complaining that they need additional RAM sinks that don't come with this cooler, but I'm still old fashioned with my 7 series card, so it should be no problem. I just hope that because of its size, that it cools better than the VF700 I have now.

If it's not fixed, then don't broke it!

VF1000LED is a very nice cooler. Using it on my heavily OC'ed 8800GT (volt mod) and it's cool as cocytus with the fan at high, max I've seen it was 60C GPU core under full load for OC stressing with my room temp around 28C (damn AC won't work for s*** sometimes!)
I was pushing 1.3v in a 1.05v GPU too. :P

Right now I stepped down to more normal volts (1.2v IIRC) and clock (much lower than in my sig) because F@H GPU2 was whining about unstable machine giving out EUE's even though my OC is 100% 3DMark stable. Load 46C with room temp at 21.4C.

Edit: And the fan at high is more than tolerable, that's coming from the guy that replaced his Antec tricool case fans at low for Scythe ones...

I've always been gun-shy when it comes to overclocking video cards. I tried it with my old 6800GT, and after several tests that came up negative for a stable OC, the card just died one day while playing some game. I think it might have had a little to do with the stock cooler, and the card getting too hot in the tests. I hadn't discovered yet the joys of aftermarket cooling for these things.

I have to say it's pretty much the same for me. Not a lot of cards OC'ed as well as this 8800GT did. Actually, no card I ever owned did. It might be because of the spectacular performance of this giganormous cooler, but I'm pretty sure 8800GTs just overclock well.

I had relatively good success with my past 2 ATI cards though, my x1900XT running at over x1900XTX speeds and my x850XT just begging for after market cooling. That card is actually still running strong and OC'ed the heck out in a friend rig.
I couldn't even play with the HD2900XT I bought from Parker, as my ex-boss wanted it and after checking my things I saw I shouldn't have bought it in the first place, dent in my wallet as cheap as Parker was selling it.

You should be happy with the VF1000. It might seem expensive, but it's dead silent and you can probably swap it whenever you get a newer card. :)

My VF700 is pretty quiet - though who could tell, with all my other fans going too, LOL! But I know Zalman is good at fairly silent solutions. And it wasn't much more expensive than my Big Typhoon was, and for its size, didn't seem bad.

Delivery is estimated for Friday, so I'll get to spend some time this weekend seeing how well it performs. I'm gonna try the OCZFreeze on my CPU as well, and see what it does there.

I'm sure you will be satisfied. and you're right about Zalman making relatively silent products. It's a company with always top notch products.

I do wonder though, why I was charged $15 for 3 day shipping. I've ordered many times in the past - with more stuff than I have this time - and the shipping was much less. Does it have to do with distance from CA to NM and increased transportation costs? Or maybe the package doesn't weigh that much, and they need to make it worth their while?

I don't know what happened to my other post where I had that chart showing my results between my VF700 and new VF1000.

The AS5 worked a lot better when I lived in California, but when I came to New Mexico at a higher elevation, the cooling effectiveness changed. And yeah, the coat of AS5 I speak of has been in place for about a year, so cure time wasn't an issue.

I used a thing called Video Card Stability Test for 10 minutes, and F.E.A.R. to get the GPU load results. VCST heats up the GPU right from the get go, and gets hotter when you actually run the tests and benchmarks, which were 974 with AS5, and 984 with the OCZFreeze.
