Default [The lazy] way to fix hot HDDs

I noticed this morning that 3 of the hard drives in my server that are all stuffed into one drive cage were running extremely hot...2 in the 55c range and one about 66c.

There's no fan infront of them, and I tore out the bottom cage in this Chieftec case for watercooling (no WC right now because of dead pump) so here's my lazy fix for it:

Code:
HiDefBox ~ # hddtemp /dev/hda
/dev/hda: Maxtor 6Y250P0: 37 C
HiDefBox ~ # hddtemp /dev/sda
/dev/sda: Maxtor 6Y160M0: 45 C
HiDefBox ~ # hddtemp /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb: ST3400620AS: 41 C or F
HiDefBox ~ # hddtemp /dev/sdc
/dev/sdc: ST3200822A: 39 C
That's better...that fan should keep itself upright because of the direction it's blowing

Not sure what I'll do when I get the watercooling back up in that system though.

Wow, nice drop in temps! Hopefully you don't have to ever touch your case though. If I am understanding you correctly that fan is just sitting up there with no screws or anything to secure it. I have some of those Evercool aluminum fans and while they are very nice, they are also very heavy and I can imagine if it were to fall over onto the HDD it could give it enough of a bang to throw off the read head and corrupt some data. I would at least put some tape or a couple zip-ties on it. The last thing you need to do is bump into the machine and have it kill your data, especially if this is indeed a server!

Yeah since the casing is aluminum it's heavy enough to hold itself up fairly well, and the fact that it's blowing towards the hdd cage pushes the fan back into the case anyway - so I'm sure that as long as the case isn't bumped it'll be fine. It would suck to lose any data on it - it has all backups from my system but it's also my media box and Portage server...1TB worth of drives in it.

It's just temporary until I get a new WC pump, then that thing will be back on water cooling (and a LOT quieter)...I'll just have to buy some more 3.5" -> 5.25" brackets and mount them above I guess (I have a top blowhole cut there).

So, I guess the "mod" worked! Temps are way down! Good job!

I'd do what Blake said and secure the fan somehow; Just a couple zip ties ensures that you don't lose any data.
