Default CPU Fan Speeds

Okay, I give up on this one. My CPU is running with just the stock AMD fan and idles in quiet mode at about 39-42 deg. C. which isn't bad for an FX. What's weird is that when I change the fan speed to "normal", the idle temp actually goes UP a couple degrees, and a couple degrees more in "turbo" mode. (All the way up to 48 deg!)

Strange indeed... any ideas why?

Are you sure the fan speed is changing correctly (or changing at all)? Try using something like SpeedFan to see if it reports the fan RPM. With a setting like "Turbo", it almost sounds like you are turning on an auto-overclocking feature, make sure you are actually tweaking what you think you are (double check processor speeds in CPU-Z).

I feel so stupid. Was playing with the uGuru utility and never noticed that moving from quiet to turbo mode increased voltage from 1.44 to 1.53, and external clock speed from 204Mhz to 216Mhz.

(The motherboard manual absolutely stinks and I thought I was just changing CPU fan speeds. LOL )

I have no idea whether it actually runs any faster in the "turbo" mode, I've only noticed that the fan is a lot noisier and the processor runs warmer. 12 Mhz doesn't seem like much to me, but I know absolutely nothing about overclocking.

Well, those automatic overclocking options are definitely not the way to go. They are really a big joke (marketing gimmick). If you want to dabble in the dark arts of overclocking, just give the workd and we'll be happy to point you in the right direction.

Thanks, but I think I'll leave this one alone. Trying to do any serious overclocking would undoubtedly mean changing cpu fans and this cheap ram, and I'm not about to put any money into this rig. Will wait until I build a new quad system next year.
