Default The Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro Heatsink/Fan

Paul L has his thought up on Actic Cooling's newest HSF....the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro.
Check it out here, then come back and tell us what you think.

Sweeet.... This is the heatsink that i intend to purchase for my new A64 rig. Considering i don't have enough cash for any of the thermalright heatsinks.

Wow, that was one of the more fun reviews to read! Nice job! I loved the "typical situation" individuals, it was a nice touch

But in all seriousness, I too was expecting stellar performance from this heatsink/fan. But these results show that it it really a pretty basic heatsink worthy of the low price tag. I guess I would be a Silent Sam, that's why I was interested in this product. But I also have a bit of Enthusiast Ed in me. So overall, I don't think this heatsink quite fits my needs. Guess I'll just wait until you can review the Scythe Ninja with a very quiet 120mm fan ;)

Yea. i was surpised at the performance results. I thought it would be atleast 3c lower than the stock. Disapointing. Its either this or stock for now though. I think i will just go stock....

To be honest, I was pretty disappointed. This wasn't purchased specifically for review purposes, but for my own system after reading quite a few reviews. Looking at the drops others were getting on single-core processors, I was expecting more than a neck-and-neck race with the stock heatsink. In fact, I originally wasn't planning on removing the pre-applied MX-1 thermal paste, but the results threw me off enough that I wanted to rule out the possibility that Arctic Cooling just slapped way too much on there. The AS-5 did make a small difference, but it was still basically a dead heat unless I handicapped the stock unit.

I gotta give credit where credit is due though - AMD has just done a fine job with their X2 heatsinks, and some units are apparently now shipping with four heatpipes on both sides (mine had two). I saw a pic of one that a user on another forum was running his 4400+ X2 (at 2.42GHz), and his temps were an impressive 35C idle, 42C load.

That would be my recommendation. Use SpeedFan to get the noise to a level where you're comfortable, and then make a decision on whether you need a third party solution or not. Cranking mine down to 65% was pretty damn quiet and the temps were still acceptable IMO, at least for stock operation.

I have to agree on that as well......the minimal temp drop isn't enough for me to pay for it over having a stock HSF. I will end up lapping the stock HSF that comes with the single core Athlon 64's. Gotta thank Blake for that one......really nice guide on the lapping btw.

When I start to do some moderate to heavy OCing, I'm going for the Thermalright XP-90C........pure copper HS, and couple it with either a Panaflo H1A or a Delta SHE series fan (yes, I know it sounds like a jet taking off, or it can anyways, but for the air pressure and flow, I don't mind it)

Well-written review on the HSF Paul, though it didn't quite give you the results you were wanting........you don't know till you install, right? :)

actaully that provokes a question. Does speed fan only lower the speed of 3 pin fans?

but its main feature is that it can change fan speeds (depending on the capabilities of your sensor chip and your hardware) according to the temperatures inside your pc, thus reducing noise. Several sensors, like Winbond's and the AS99127F support fan speed changing, as well as others from Maxim, Myson, Analog Devices, National Semiconductor and ITE, but the hardware manufacturer must have connected the relevant pins to some additional, yet trivial, circuitry.
this is directly from http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

so I guess it really depends on what your onboard monitor can do, and what brand it is......there's more detail on the site. hope this helps! :D
