Default Video Card

Okay i am planning to buy a new video card finding the radeon 9550 is quite slow to me. I am spending around 150-200 dollar video card CAN. I wanted to know if my motherboard can handle PCI-EXPRESS,PCI or just AGP. Is PCI-EXPRESS better than PCI and AGP?

What motherboard do you have. Chances are that if it has an AGP slot, it will ONLY support AGP. AGP is leaps and bounds better than PCI. AGP was the replacement for PCI as PCI-Epxress is the replacement for AGP (and PCI).

Since upgrading an AGP video card can be self-defeating sometimes, give us a little idea as to your satisfaction and upgrade plans with your current machine. If you plan to upgrade the core components of the system sometime soon (within a year), then it might be a good idea to wait on the video card upgrade until you upgrade the rest of your system. That way you can get all modern components (like PCI-Express) without having to worry about being limited by future upgrades (like you are now).

Speaking of the rest of your system, could you please post what your entire system specs are? Better yet, make a signature with your system specs please

HAHAHA, you happen to have one of the very few motherboards featuring both AGP and PCI-Express slots! Is this your motherboard?

Now that we have that out of the way, you would be best getting a PCI-Express video card. Not because PCI-Express is faster than AGP (although it is), but because all of the newer/faster cards are made for PCI-Express. Each new video card release is less and less likely to be adapted to fit AGP. So there is really no sense in trying to cling to AGP, it's basically dead.

As for your needs, if you can spend $150 - $200 on a video card, I would suggest the AMD ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 256MB of some flavor (whichever has the best price and accessory bundle). I have one and really like it. Great bang for the buck. If that is a little bit of a stretch on your wallet, then the X1950 GT (a slight step down) would be your next best bet. Or if you would prefer an nVidia card, the 7900 GS is the best card available in your budget. What resolution do you game at?

After a google search it appears to be an Asrock 939dual, which has both an AGP and PCIe slot. Which means you can use oneof the two. This is great news, because now we can recommend a good PCIe card for you @ about $200. I notice you had an ATI card, do you prefer that over an Nvidia?

my recomendation would be a geforce 7900gs $169 after rebate.

As far as the specs go, we would still ike those in your signature, eveif they are just typed, then we won't have to go through this again, asking about new hardware. download this cpu-z program and give us the model/revision of the mother board. It will also (most likely) list the type of ram that you have (if you don't already know that)... THANKS!

PS Blake was laughing because it is rare to have a motherboard with both AGP and PCIe. Your MB is not crappy.

No, not at all. It was actually suprisingly popular when it was released.

Newegg is the overwhelmingly preferred online retail vendor for computer components...
X1950 Pro selection...
X1950 GT selection...
7900 GS selection...
