Default Upcoming graphics chips from ATI, Nvidia

AMD-ATI and Nvidia are preparing for the next graphics chip showdown. And there is already a good deal of information (and rumor) on the two chips due in June.

The names of the two upcoming product families have been widely reported: The ATI line is branded as the Radeon HD 4800, while the Nvidia is dubbed the GeForce GTX 200.

Advanced Micro Devices is expected to launch the HD 4850 (price estimates of graphics boards range between $189 and $219) and then follow with the 4870 (estimates range between $199 and $279). In the fourth quarter, AMD plans to add the dual-chip ATI Radeon 4870 X2.

Nvidia will respond with the high-end GeForce GTX 200 family. Initial products will be the GeForce GTX 260 and GTX 280.

VR-Zone has already gotten its hands on some preliminary performance numbers for the HD 4850 and 4870. German-language site Hardware-Infos has posted a table with specifications of the HD 4850 and 4870.

Tech site tg daily said "that card vendors will start printing their boxes next week, which means that the specifications are final at this time."

Less seems to be known about the Nvidia GTX 260 and 280, though a Turkish site is claiming to have all the specifications.

I've also heard that the 4850 will hit week 25 (the week of June15th-22nd) with the nVidia 200's hitting at the same time. THe 4870 is set for July. Q4 sounds about right for the 4870 X2, as that's October-ish.

Might work. If nVidia releases at the high prices they're expected to along side ATI's middle units, ATI can release the 4870 right afterwards and chop 'em off at the knees. Should edge the nVidia prices down to reality, and perhaps put a push on the 55nm shrink. Sounds good anyway.

Eh, i'll stick with my GX2 for the time being, mainly cause I can't afford to keep buyin GPUs lol
But its nice to see some competition now, although lets hope its not just all talk like the 3000 series was @_@

(thanks blake!)

I was kinda hoping for a cool name change from Nvidia. GTX 200 just sounds too much like something you'd buy off a showroom floor.

IMO they're still coming out with new hardware too often, it kind of degrades the value, plus the hardware is still far ahead of the games anyway.

That is probably very true JayA55. It seems like you get a new upper end vid card, at a tune of $250, and about 3 months later, new upper end cards are out and your is worth less than half of what you paid for it!!!

GTX? so will it be GTX 200GT? or GTSX 200? I wonder if they will keep it as GTX and use only numbering instead of the cryptic GT, GTS, GTX among the same family. This way the 220 and 230 may essentially be the same core but with more memory on the 230...

we will see once they're released.... also this means it may be time to jump into the 8800s which are dropping in price...

Thanks HL and Corsair!
