Default Unlock extra pipe lines on the X1800GTO - turn it into X1800

John over at Madshrimps passed this article along to me, I think it may be of interest to any of you with the X1800GTO video cards.

Quote:
Don't know if this news has been widely spread yet, The Inquirer spotted a modification of the X1800GTO which unlocks 4 pipelines and allows you to bump the performance to X1800XL level,
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=30843

"CHINESE website HKEPC shows us how to mod a X1800GTO to a X1800XL by enabling the 16 pipelines. a HIS card was used. You can download the appropriate mod document and the mod bios. Of course, everything you will do to your machine will be at your own risk. "

HKEPC tester also included a few benchmark runs with 3DMark comparing the performance before/after the modification, a quick and dirty chart of his results I threw together here: http://www.madshrimps.be/forums/show...threadid=23072

Spread the word, a modded X1800GTO might give 7600GT some nice competition,

That's awesome! I'm suprised no one else has figured this out yet after the success of the X800GTO2...
Speaking of which, I just found the HIS X1800GTO for only $200 after a $50 mail in rebate @NewEGG... ;)

Calling sbohdan! Calling sbohdan!!!

hm, too bad I got a new 6800 PCI-E for my new rig :(
last night when I put in the new card (the last piece the rig was missing), I found out that my motherboard (a brand new MSI P4N diamond) is probably toast (no posting, beeping or going into bios: checked with different PSU, CPU,ram, disconnected all and one by one all-nothing- so it seems the mobo is bad :(

I was so happy to get the card and was gonna OC the sucker and the whole rig and do lots of pictures and a write up :(
and do some extra cooling for you guys and now I'm screwed :(

Oh man, that a bummer sbohdan!
That's the most sad faces I think I've ever seen in one post before! I feel ya man, losing a great piece of hardware sucks. Is there anyway you can still RMA or exchange it or something?

thanks guys. I'm really hoping I could RMA the mobo because it was brand new and not working from scratch :(

That should be sufficient reason for an RMA. I'd give it a shot. Good luck man!

the worst part is that I got the mobo first and had to get the pentiumD830 instead of the pentium D920 (the MSI p4n diamond isn't compatible with the 900 series which has double the cache and is lower on heat:( )
after a long and carefull consideration (reading lots of reviews and tweaking guides), buying each part separatelly (except the ddr2 ram: courtesy of Hardware Logic :) ), and finally when I drop in the last piece of hardware (the vid. card) - all happy to start up the new rig for the first time - and... nothing.
I went down to a service to have them find out what exactly is the problem and still hoping that I was stupid somehow and made some kind of mistake when putting it together :?
still no word from them. still hoping. can't believe to have one of the most expensive MSI mobo's and find it faulty. I would expect it from a cheapskate noname something but this...

I have some good news. since I did not have another rig at home with socket 775 , so I took down the new rig to comp. service where they were able to switch the cpu and mobo and it turned out that both the mobo and the cpu is good in separate rigs but not together so it seems that there is a compatibility issue rather than the mobo being faulty. I asked them to flash the latest bios (I can't do it because the rig wont turn on to do the flashing, but they will put in a different cpu, then flash the bios and then put back my pentiumD830) and see if it works then. tomorrow will get the answer :?
