Default Sapphire 4870 arrived!

She came in today from MWave and it's the Sapphire version with the hot chick on the cooler.
I ran some benchmarks on my HD2900XT 512 and I gotta run through them with the 4870 and then I will post a graph.

Here it is installed in the Torture Rack. The card runs hot as hell with default fan control, at 0% usage it's temp is 75C. I'm wondering if replacing the TIM with AS5 or IC7 Diamond will help that.

Here is a shot of GPUz. Now the fun begins I cant wait to OC the snot out of this card. CCC allows 300MHZ of OCING the GDDR5, which is 600mhz effective :)

Here is the 4870 vs my 2900XT 512mb, all stock video clocks with the CPU at 2.8ghz.

Yeah i wonder if the 4870s are reference coolers like the 4850s were. Because my 4850s run at the 70s/80s temp. People who've swapped out the cooler for an S1 report a drop to 40s/50s in their temps, i'd do it myself but the ramsink being exposed is what makes me hesitate on it.

Btw, don't you love how the sapphire "ruby" is like a cross between ATI's Ruby and Lara Croft?

Almost makes me want to get sapphire over Visiontek, but the warranty for visiontek gets the nod.

That is a beast of a card, Ranger. I'm suprised at the high temps. It can't hurt to use some good ole AS5 if you have it, or some of that kick-ass Ceramique stuff.

Sweet card! I hope it's working good for you. I know I'm glad to see ati coming back like this... especially since crossfire seems niftier than sli was.

must...resist...buying...now...
gotta...sell...gx2...1st...
but honestly, i'm a bit worried bout those temps. I put OCZ Freeze and IC Diamond 7 on my 4850s, and i get 70s also. Guess we gotta get some aftermarket cooling, unless rivatuner decides to update.

Oh ranger, if you want the cooling i hear the fix for the 4850 works for the 4870 too.
Radeon HD 4850 Heat issues - Guru3D.com Forums

The other way is to pull out the PWM wire and have it run at 100% all the time.

I just did the profile fix and put my fan at 75%. Since i usually have a fan blowing in my room to keep the air circulating, im not that worried about the noise. I can tell you both my cards in crossfire are less noisy than my GX2 with 70% fan speed was. Im look at a 50 for idle.
