Default NVIDIA Details GeForce 9600 GT

DailyTech - NVIDIA Details GeForce 9600 GT

NVIDIA's newest mid-range processor, codenamed D9M, will make its official debut as the GeForce 9600 GT.

Corporate guidance from NVIDIA lists the initial GeForce 9600 GT shipments come stock with a 650 MHz core clock and a 1625 MHz unified shader clock. Unlike the G84 core found on GeForce 8600 GT, D9M will feature a 256-bit memory bus interface. Coupled with a 900 MHz memory clock, NVIDIA calculates the memory bandwidth at 57.6 GB/s.

well i'm about ready to see some benchmarks. Anybody with me?
My rig could use a nice little pick-me-up, I've been waiting to see if money falls on me right before I splurged for an 8800gt

ewww 26A of power

Quote:
ChileHardware published slides yesterday claiming the GeForce 9600 requires a 400W power supply that requires 26A on the 12V rail. Unlike previous mid-range GeForce cards, the D9M will require a 6-pin supplementary power connector.

It pretty much matches everything on the 8800GT, except the 8800 has a higher texture fill rate.

Nvidia is notorious for overestimating the required power supply wattage and current through the 12V line, dating back to the 6800 Ultra.

Besides, 26A is nothing for any decent PSU.

Oh yeah, and before we forget, there is the HD3850.

Sure, most decent PSU's should be able to handle it, but the amount of heat produced from something that power hungry is what gets ya! Those cheapo noisy coolers trying to keep these hot little GPU's cool is no easy task.

We're still talking about the mid-range bound 9600 GT, right? Nvidia has done a nice job keeping the temps and noise down on their midrange parts for the past three generations in the 6600GT, 7600, and 8600. While it is anybody's guess of the power and heat output of this card, it's probable that Nvidia doesn't stray far from what they've done with previous generations.

However, with the squeeze that AMD's put on the mainstream market over the past month, they might be in trouble if it's just a 8600GTS with twice the memory bandwidth. They might be pressured into clocking the 9600 to its limits (like it did with the 8800GT) or give it more stream processors altogether.

The 400w/26 amps is for the whole system, not for just the card itself. Nvidia lists that the PSU should have at least 26 amps to handle the load of the card along with an average midrange system the card will most likely find home in. These are the same requirements as the 8800GTS, so with this card being almost on par with the 8800GT it's not that bad.

The killer is going to be if this is any inkling of the new flagship cards power requirements. Mid-range always uses alot less then flagship if convention holds. G92 is 65nm like the new chips are going to be, and smokes a hole due to heat. The flagship core is no doubtly going to be a monster since they're cramming more transistors on the same die size. This heat and power draw is one reason while I'm rooting for proton-based processors instead of the current electron.
