My system specs are listed below. I have a 9800xt and I was wondering if it was worthwhile to move up to a 7800gs or some other card? I will not be able to buy a new system for awhile so going to PCI-E 16x won't happen right away.

If you're going to be doing any gaming then it would definitely be worthwhile to upgrade. The 7800gs is a really good value in that you have all the features and power of a current gen card, while still in AGP form. However, if gaming isn't your thing I don't see any real compelling reason to upgrade. =) ![]()

Thanks drew. Right now obilivan is taking a beating with my 9800xt so yes gamming is a priority.

| Modder-ator | Damn! I replied to this as soon as the forums were back up but my post was lost in the shuffle. You will definately see a nice performance improvement in the 7800GS over the 9800XT. I'd say the 9800XT performs about as well as a mildly overclocked 6600GT. I just have a hard time recommending you spend so much money on a nice AGP card when you said yourself you plan to go to PCI-Express eventually. But I guess that all depends on how long you plan to wait it out and how much extra $$ you have lying around to spend... |

Thanks gvblake22. I don't plan on going to PCI-E for quite awhile so they will probably be into the DX10 cards for sometime before I switch. I know it's like beating a dead horse putting money in this system but if I can get a year or two more out of it with a better video card then thats the way I have to go. Right now on medium settings in Obilivan I'm getting frame rates as low as 15 outside with rain and grass moving and fighting lowers it more sometimes. Inside it's just fine so if the new card can boost the outside at medium settings to 25-30 fps that would be great.

Also, there are alot of easy tweaks you can do to the ini to get a few more FPS. If you haven't checked one out already, here's a guide that will take care of you. I got an average boost of 4-5fps in some areas. I'm tempted to upgrade from my x850XT to a 7800GS as well, but I don't really think I'll get any performance benefit, just more eye candy (HDR). Does anyone know how well the 7800GS overclocks? ![]()
