Default Just purchased new card. Need input.

My AMD Athlon XP 1.8 ghz system got fried by lighning last oct (all but my video card). I could not afford a PCI-E system so I settled for the fastest single core AMD CPU I could get which was the 64 Athlon 4000+ with a pretty nice AGP mobo. Now I am in the market to purchase a new video card which I did last night. My choice from all the reviews says the Geforce 7800 GS oc 256mb is the best I will get for the AGP bus. My question is, how much of a performance boost will i get in games from my old XFX Geforce FX 5200 128mb? Right now, I can play BF2 and BF2142 with ALL settings set to low and don't even think about AA or AF!..lol. The graphics are crappy to ok but at least I can play the game.

a game boy playing tetris to a DS playing mario cart.

It's a LARGE upgrade in performance.

Newegg.com - BFG Tech GeForce 7800GS BFGR78256GSOC Video Card - Retail With the MIR, it only costs 170 bucks. Well worth the upgrade IMO.

One question, how much ram do you have? Anything less than one gig of ram is holding you back.

Yea Justin. That is exactly the one I purchased. I could have gotten it a few dollars cheaper from another etailer in the short run but went with Newegg's deal for the long run with $50.00 more in my pocket.

How far will I be able to turn up the settings in BF2142? Will I be able to use AA or AF? I have not been able to use AA or AF in ANY game with old card. :(

I run 1.25 gb ram pc3200
64 athlon 4000+
1ghz bus speed (HT)
I usually run games at 1024x768

Yes, you will be able to use AA and AF. Really, fpsjustin said it well: a game boy playing tetris to a DS playing mario cart.
It's an immense leap. As for the exact settings I couldn't tell you, but you can set them pretty high.

Man you are gonna love the jump in FPS you get with the new card. I would compare it to playing a ps2 and moving up to a ps3. Also the 7800's are great overclockers. At least they are in PCIE.

is that enough abbreviations for you? LMAO

I would rather read a NewEgg review than a [H] review

This one is BFG's OC'ed model. Anyone have any luck overclocking it further?

the 7800GS is a cut down 7800GT with only 16 pixelpipes compared to the GT's 20. i know that with my 7800GT i can play BF2 with everything maxed at 1280x1024 (including AA and AF) and get a minimum of 60FPS. i suspect you should be able to do the same at 1024x768 and quite possibly at 1280x1024

I am curious since you bought a new MoBo, CPU and Video Card why didn't you go with PCI-E? I am also curious what combination you used to get 1.25 GB of RAM.

My AMD rig went from a 6800GT (Which would of smoked your current card) to a 7800GS. The difference was significant.

I'd overclock your cpu before overclocking your videocard.
