Default DirectX 10 Compatibility.....

I was wondering about the DirectX 10 and how it's going to effect people that are using card like mine (Evga GeForce 7800 gt). When I install Windows Vista will DirectX 10 be updated on my card? I'm not sure if I'm asking the correct question for the issue?

AMD Athlon 64 Processor 4000+
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
4 GB DDR SDRAM
2 eVGA GeForce 7800 GT 256 MB
2 Seagate Barracuda 7200 (200GB each)
Thermaltake Tsunami
Windows XP SP2

The cards are capable of rendering stuff to its max which in this case is DirectX9. If you run a DX10 program, as long as it has backward compatibility to lower the settings to DX9 settings then there shouldn't be any problems.
I wouldn't worry about this for at least a year or so.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

i THINK there is software rendering thats going to be available for the DX9 cards which will work, but definitely not hardware acceleration. it will be an ADEQUATE picture at the least, and vista will run fine with DX9, but for all the enhancements, DX10 is what u want (but as mentioned, thats not for awhile). be happy and simmer with your card for a good 6-8 months if not even 10-12. when the time is right, HL will be buzzing with the comments to upgrade.

cheers.

What Screwballl said sounds about right. Vista only requires a DirectX 9 card to run the operating system. Beyond that, it is likely going to be a matter of the game or application developer to keep support for DirectX 9 hardware or not.

I don't know how to put this, but, I'm kind of a big deal.

In a nutshell, as it pertains to gaming, you will not be able to enjoy DirectX 10 programming. The significance of that is up to you. There aren't any DX10 titles available yet, but they're not far off either. Crysis, a fantastic looking and highly anticipated title from the previews, is slated for release this June, and subsequent DX10 titles aren't likely to be far behind.

As Screwball mentioned, if these new games also support DX9 (and most probably will), you can still run them on your 7800GT, they just won't look as good as without the proper hardware.

One factor that man people seem to always overlook is that the current DX10 cards are mere pilots in the technology's developments. That's equivalent to buying a slow ClawHammer saying, "It's a 64bit CPU!", completely overlooking its price and the fact that it will be replaced by much better editions as the technology matures. I would not even recommend buying a DX10 card at the moment, but stick with mid-range DX9 cards instead as you wait patiently for DX10 to mature.

Also what about the nvidia 9900GT? By the time that is released many of us will be buying the 8800GT for $120 and playing these great DX10 games... but that is still 1-2 years off if not more... by then there will likely be a DX10 hack to get it working in XP
