Default Biostar 6800XT..is auto overclock safe?

Hi
The 6800XT i bought comes with Vranger overclock utitility.came right on the driver disk..My card doen't have a temperature sensor so I can't measure that..
the speed the card comes with is 300gpu mhz I guess and 420 memory. If i hit auto over clock it jumps to 450 and around 650 for memory speed..since the card comes with the utlility is it safe to run overclocked all the time?

Welcome to the forum ttomm46. Anytime you overclock a component you potentially shorten it's life. By how much depends on the component and how much you overclock it. There's been quite a bit of discussion on the forum about the benefits of overclocking your video card. Some will say that there are benefits in doing so and others will say the gain in doing so is not significant enough to even bother doing it. Personally I don't overclock my video card but I do overclock my processor. As far as it coming with a overclock utility that doesn't mean it's safe to do. My best advice is to run your games both ways and see if you see any difference between overclocked and not. Remember just because you get a higher score on a benchmark doesn't mean you will see any difference in a game.

if you ask me, i think overclocking older videocards and lower end videocards can justify the cost. As Joker said, when you overclock a top end videocard, unless you overclock ALOT it won't give you much performance.

However, i do believe that low end graphics cards do get a good lil boost.

One more note: I'd overclock your CPU before videocard, since that's what gives the most performance.
