I guess for a gamer that would be somewhat useless to get 2 X1600XT. You know, get 2 X1600XT in 1 card for around $340 (rough estimate from price of 1 Asus X1600XT) or 1 X1900XT for around $380 that would beat the 2 X1600XT... I guess it could be great though if you wanted a multiple monitors setup.
Besides, 128bit memory interface is so last century. :P

More about dual ATI gpu's on one card here.

Its been said the the dual x1600 card was just a test, and in fact, the real card will be based on the rv570XT chipset

That would make more sense to bring this design out with a newer GPU. The cost of this dual X1600XT card is probably close to what you would pay for a 7900GT or X1900GT; and personally, I would rather have the single GPU solution than the double....

Yep I think this was just a show of the capability.

I use X1600XT 256mb GDDR3 on my test bench, and it runs CS:S maxed out HDR, AA, AF @ 1024x768. 1280x1024 is not much of a FPS drop.....

Word on the street is that ATI plans to use X1600 as a physics processor, has anyone seen the article about ATI wanting 3 PCI-E x16 slots on MB?
