Default Asus EN9800GTX 512MB Videocard Review

Click the image to open in full size.

Like many gamers, we anticipated a heated videocard war would take place this past year between Nvidia and AMD. But instead of a knock-down, drag out fight between two heavyweight contenders, we instead witnessed Nvidia dancing around the ring with its 8800 series GPUs while the company formerly known as ATI nary made an attempt at the performance crown. In recent months AMD has finally responded with its HD 3870, and while it still doesn't manage to regain the lead, it did prompt Nvidia to release a new series in its lineup, the 9x00. Or did it?

greeat review Paul!
Now if I can just get my hands on a 8800 of some sort I would be happy.. I don't mind last generation, especially when it is only 3-10fps lower then that 9800...

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Maybe in their press release they mistyped 8900GTX and just ran with it.

Nvidia kind of shot themselves in the foot by already releasing the G92 core in 8800 trim. The 9800GTX destroys the original G80 based 8800 cards, and by itself, the pricing isn't bad either. But compared with the second run 8800GT and second run 8800GTS, the 9800GTX loses a bit of bang/buck.

agreed, the early G92 release was a slap in the face... especially among us techies that can see that the 8800GTS 512MB is about as fast or faster then some of the 9x00 series

Nice review, yeah I also think nvidia have made a big mistake with the 8800GTS/9800GTX thing. It certainly blows away the G80 though, and that cards no slacker.

It seems to run pretty cool, my 8800GTS is running at 55*c idle, although im guessing thats because theres probs a huge blob of paste, but it works so im not changing it...

The GPU runs relatively cool (temps were taken in an open-air testbed), but the card itself (heatsink and PCB) get very hot to the touch.

would be nice to see side tests with MX2 and ICD7 to see what kind of results we can see...

Send me some MX2 and I'll do it. I've since applied Tuniq's TX-2 to the GPU, my current paste of choice.
