Default AMD to Use Qimonda's GDDR5 Memory

Quote:
Advanced Micro Devices' next-generation graphics processors will ship with GDDR5 (Graphics Double Data Rate 5) memory from Qimonda, the companies said Tuesday.
AMD's upcoming ATI Radeon R700 graphics chips are scheduled for release in the coming months and will offer a significant improvement over the company's current graphics chips, according to AMD executives. The R700 is the first AMD graphics chip to support GDDR5 memory.
GDDR5 chips offer much higher data rates than GDDR3 and GDDR4, which are supported by AMD's Radeon HD 3800 series graphics processors, currently AMD's most powerful graphics chips. GDDR5 chips also consume less power than other memory types.
Memory maker Qimonda will supply the GDDR5 chips used with the first R700 chips that hit the market, but AMD is working with other suppliers, including Samsung Electronics and Hynix.
Qimonda said its GDDR5 chips are being produced in volume and have started shipping to AMD, suggesting that the launch of the R700 is not far off. AMD did not say when the next-generation graphics chip will be introduced.

meanwhile system memory is still limited to version 3? why not use some of these advances to increase the speed of the existing DDR2/3 setups?

Thanks HL and Corsair!

so what you are saying is to stop production on new tech and wait for the old tech to catch up? Meanwhile your competition (nvidia) passes you up again and you play the role of budget gaming VGA for another 2 years?

no I am saying use the DDR5 modules somehow to work with existing DDR 2 or 3 slots... of course I would assume that GDDR is highly specialized for graphics usage and would not work properly as normal system memory.

WHAT? Last time I checked AMD doesnt make ddr/ddr2/ddr3 memory modules. They make graphic cards and processors and they do a fair job at it. I just dont understand ^this post.

This whole GDDR5 thing is crazy, I'm looking forward to the new 4870 card though! May upgrade from my 8800GT if it's worth it.

yes because the Xbox 360 does not have have standard system memory in relation to how it is used in our desktop or laptop computers, it uses 512MB GDDR3 as both system and video memory...
