| So, I have a laptop I bought for $20 off someone at work (about 3 months ago). After fixing it up and upgrading the memory. I finally managed to get a screw off and seemed to have been impossible to unscrew before. Anyways, I want this old video card out and a new card in. The current card: S3 Savage/IX+MV AGP 2x 4MB vRAM 100MHz : ? MHz Bus properties: SDR 64-Bit I would like to throw out this literally taped in video card in exchange for something with a higher core clock and more vRAM, preferably 16MB. Opinions? Places to buy (Can't find anything at the egg. Not surprised)? Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Conroe @ 2.80GHz Cooler Master GeminII - Thanks Rich and HL! | i'm not sure if you can access a bios in a laptop, but mabye you can change it to 4x agp? Just a thought because i know in normal desktops you have a choice between 2x-4x or 4x-8x. | I'm Diggin it! | The thing about a laptop is that the video solution is usually soldered into the motherboard. You would need a specialized solder removing tool and then be able to point solder spots without overheating the surround PCB and pathways. If you go to a higher performance video solution, and you even get it to work, the laptop isn't designed for that newer solution. What I mean by that is, the new video solution will not be properly cooled since the laptop was set up with a very specific set of temperature parameters in mind. It can be done, but very few people have the tools, the know-how and most importantly, the ability to alter the laptop in such a fashion as to keep the video solution cool. It's only been within the last year or so that laptops have come out with user replaceable video cards. And even then, they've been extremely limited in how much of an upgrade they can make based on how the laptop was designed to cool that component. Good luck. | Thanks for the input! I've already pulled the old video card out, its not soldered in and can be replaced. I doubt that colling for the new card would be an issue, but if so I believe I can cook something up ;) Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Conroe @ 2.80GHz Cooler Master GeminII - Thanks Rich and HL! | why don't you post some pics and what you've already done so far and make this a project log? I think it would be interesting. BTW, is it limited to a 2x agp? May as well, it seemed like an easy upgrade before but now it seems like an interesting project. Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Conroe @ 2.80GHz Cooler Master GeminII - Thanks Rich and HL! | Modder-ator | The only reason I can see putting in the time and effort to do this upgrade would be for the sheer enjoyment/experience. You will not see any kind of signifigant performance improvement by upgrading such outdated video. I think this is going to be more money than it's worth (unless you are doing it just to do it). |
