I honestly can't believe they would only charge 299.99 for a GTX. Im thinking at least 399.99 initially, which would make your stepup probably around 100+. I mean thats how much they brought the G92 GTS out at

I expect somewhere in the $400 you'll have to fork for the 9800GTX.
From the benching they did at tweaktown it looks like Tri-SLi doesn't scale as nicely as SLi, far from making it worth it imho.

But you do have to understand if you are going this Tri-Sli route, the drivers are still very raw just like the "Quad SLI" and even the GX2's drivers. I'd revisit in 3 months to see if they matured the drivers a bit before declaring it unworthy of purchase.

Is it me or is the performance increase from SLI to Tri and Quad SLI only give marginal performance gains when compared to going from one GPU to SLI????

Agreed. Look at 9800GTX SLI and Tri-SLI, at 1920x1200 there is only a one point difference!
