Welcome to the forums!

I would get the 8600GTS. I just can't see paying $300+ for a DX9 part right now. I've experienced a lot of issues with Nvidia drivers in Vista, but Vista is still quite young. As the OS matures, so will the drivers. You'll be kicking yourself square in the nutz if you buy a DX9 part now and 6 months later, want to use DX10 games in Vista and have to buy a new video card to do so.

That's my opinion on it.

How about neither....
From the looks of this preview it seems as though the much more reasonably priced X1950Pro easily wins the performance crown over the 8600GTS. That is an incredibly inflated price for the 8600GTS (which is supposed to be priced near the $200 mark). If you're willing to drop $300 on a video card, get the 8800GTS.

also does it matter that the 8600 only has 128-bit bus memory?
how does bus memory affect games?

edit:oh yeah, im in australia :)
edit:is the 8800 GTS 320MB much of a step-up from the 8600 GTS?

Here's my take on this.

The unified Shader architecture of the 8xxx series of GPU's can overcome the 256-bit interface of the 7950GT. From what I've read on the matter, the 8600GTS is a few FPS faster than a similarly equipped 7950GT. And it's DX10 capable.

The only thing that sucks about buying an 8xxx series card right now is that without any games that use DX10, there's no way to know how well these cards will perform under that work load.

What OS are you using?

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Just when you think you're gonna impress a guest to the forums, Panda shows up and ruins the whole friggin thing.

For the prices that store is asking relative to the available GPU's, I think the 8600GTS would be your best bet right now.
