from what I understand the standard drivers should work... never heard of custom different drivers for mobile platforms (except such as Geforce Go)...

Yeah, after looking at nVidia's website, I don't see any option for an 8600M GT and the GeForce GO series only go up to the 7 Series GPUs. Try the straight 8600GT driver and see how it goes, but make sure you download it for the correct operating system. The one screwballl linked you to is the Windows XP driver. If you just got this laptop, it probably has a 32-bit version of Windows Vista, which would require this driver. But if you have Windows Vista 64-bit, you will need this driver.

i tried to get the driver from nvidia but they wont allow me to download it due to the fact they state that the normal drivers lack energy save technology and yes i do have windows vista home premium but when ever i try to install the acer ready drivers they tell me i have not ... vista is making my blood boil...

laptop2go takes the nvidia drivers and supplies modded INF to install them. I use it on my dv9500T that carries a 8600GS with no problems.

wouldn't be the notebook as much as the 8600GT. They all use the nvidia driver, its just you need a modified inf to enable those drivers to be installed.
