Default 3870 X2: The New Champ

Quote:
Obviously, AMD has captured the title of "fastest single graphics card" with the Radeon HD 3870 X2. There is much to like here. The X2 is generally faster than the GeForce 8800 Ultra, and it has HD video decode acceleration that Nvidia's older G80 GPU lacks. In all, the X2 looks to be a pretty good value in a single-card, high-end solution at $449. The X2 does draw more power and generate more noise under load than the GeForce 8800 Ultra, but it's not unacceptable on either front for a card in this class. And the X2's seamless multi-monitor support is the icing on the cake. I'm really pleased to see that working so well.

Currently slower than two 8800 GT's in SLI. Nevertheless, good to see some high end competition from AMD. When are the nVidia 9 series due out anyways?

Soon, from what I heard. And as always, ATI and Nvidia racing for the "fastest single card" out there by adding another GPU.
Nvidia could sadly just put 2 8800GTS 512 together and make the 3870 X2 bite the dust, heh.

Good to see AMD releasing a higher performance part (even if it is nothing new). I found these charts to be very interesting...

the planned 9800gx2 is gonna be two 8800gt 512mb cards slapped together, looks farily cool, but i dont think it will go as well as the 3870x2, as generally crossfire scales better than sli. there are pics of the 9800gx2 floating around, looks farily cool. also, the 9800gx2 is gonna be like the 7950gx2, with 2 pcbs, but they will be cooled by a single hsf between the 2 pcb's, prolly et mega hot tho. GO AMD!!!!

EDIT: google image search 9800 gx2 and youll get a whole bunch of stuff.

prelim tests show that the 3870 X2 is basically on par with the GTX. I dont see how its "superior" or the new king since its price is basically the same as the GTX now. I'd still buy the gtx over this, and crossfire support is just as buggy as SLI is lol.
Debating whether to keep my G92 gts or step it up to the GTX. Prob gonna decide in the next coming weeks since the rumors is 9000 series release this month.

(thanks blake!)

actually the 3870 X2 surpasses the 8800 Ultra in most games and benchmarks. also the cheapest ultra on the egg costs $629.99 right nowhere, while all the 3870 X2's on newegg cost $449. so yes the 3870 X2 IS the leader right now AND it is cheaper considerably than the ultra.
