| I'm looking at getting a new board to get my wife's computer up and running again, and like the topic line asks, will a socket 478 board run XP SP2 if it has fairly up-to-date chipset software? Now before you start hitting me with things like "Why skt 478?", this is just basically a quick fix I'm thinking of to get her new hdd going with Windows, so I don't have to get a new cpu and ram right now. The new disc I have contains SP2, and during the last attempt to install it on her current setup, I got a message to the effect of "...the software you are trying to install is not compatible with SP2...", which leads me to believe that if I get a newer motherboard with a newer chipset, then it'll work. Later on, when I get the go ahead to build a completely new system, I'll go beyond s478, but like I said, for now it's a quick fix. Here is a board I'm looking at: Newegg.com - ASUS P4S800D-X ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail I was also thinking of throwing in my P4 3.2ghz (800Mhz FSB), since I think her P4 2.8 runs on 133Mhz (that's what it says in her BIOS). If it's not fixed, then don't broke it! |

| I gave my brother an aging OEM Gateway (circa 2000) socket 478 rig that works very well with Windows XP and SP2. Not sure what might be causing your problem. Maybe something within your BIOS perhaps? Last edited by garetjax; December 26th, 2006 at 17:23. |

| The board you have linked shows XP drivers on the Asus site, but they are over 3 years old. So you might want to send a note to their tech support and ask the question. I have seen some of those boards where you had to install base xp and then install the service packs to get it to work. Commodore 64 overclocked into outerspace ![]() |

What chipset are you using? And just to be 100% sure, you aren't trying to run RAID or anything, correct? EDIT - Wait, you said that was the board you were looking at correct? Not the board you having problems with. Or did I misread that? Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Conroe @ 2.80GHz Cooler Master GeminII - Thanks Rich and HL! | Yeah, there should really be no issue. It sounds more like a corrupted install rather than a hardware issue. I ran XP on a Slot 1 Pentium III... and it's still running. BTW, that's about a 7 year old computer (and a kickass CPU). - Core 2 Quad Q6600 - DFI Infinity 975X - 4GB Corsair XMS2 w/ DHX DDR2-800 - 250GB Seagate 7200.10RPM + 160GB Hitachi 5400.4RPM - ATi Radeon X1900XT 256MB - Cooler Master Centurion 5 + OCZ StealthXStream 600W - Acer 19" P191W Monitor - Logitech Z-5500 Digital + Logitech MX Revolution - Vista Ultimate x64 |

| T-Rex | There's no problem installing XP SP2 on a P4S800D-X, after all this board was made for Windows XP. ;D It's all a matter of finding updated drivers, which is never really hard when you know where to look. However, the drivers included with the P4S800D-X should be fully functional. |

| The P4S800D-X is the board he is looking at, not the one he owns. Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Conroe @ 2.80GHz Cooler Master GeminII - Thanks Rich and HL!
