Default RJ45 Jacks on motherboard....

I have 2 RJ45 jacks on my motherboard, and I was wondering what's the reason for having 2 built into the motherboard.

Should you choose to do so, you can easily set up a computer with that motherboard as a server without having to install a separate NIC.

So, if you have a separate NIC, how would you go about setting up a server through the 2 onboard NIC's?

OK, so what you have is basically a motherboard with 2 Network Interface Connections. You have a few options. You could simply connect one port to the Cable Modem or DSL Modem or whatever modem allowing the machine to connect to the outside world (Internet). The other port could be connected to either another computer or a router (or switch) allowing connection through that computer for other machines. You would simply set up that machine to "Allow Other Computers To Connect To The Internet" through it.

That is a pretty rough overview but that is about what things are. Now as Dred mentions, you could allow the computer with the two NICs to run as a server or whatever.

Ron

Or as a router, firewall and the like. 1 NIC incoming (internet), the other NIC
outgoing (to your other machines).
