to be honest, if its that old they may not have the MB mainstream anymore. I can say like 3 yr old Pentium 4's use Socket 478 MBs that aren't mainstream at all. Near impossible to find them new anymore.

so, is there anyway to replace this mobo? I dont mind getting a different model, as long as the cpu fits. Im pretty sure it was a AMD 2500.

Newegg.com - PC CHIPS M848A (V5.0) A (462) SiS 746FX ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
This one looks like it might work, but it doesnt have the best reviews.

these are the SocketA's at Newegg:
Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!)

not much but I would also suggest the PCCHIPS one mentioned above or look around for someone selling a custom built computer for $100-200 and use some parts and mobo out of that (or may come with a faster CPU)

Socket A has been dead for quite some time. You might be able to find some other decent Socket A boards on e-bay or something.

BTW, did you mean A7N8X instead of A7NBX? Any of the Asus A7N8X or A7V8X boards would be a reliable replacement. If you need SATA, then you need the deluxe version, or the Abit NF7-S rev. 2.

one idea is to put the money into a decent AM2 processor and board (and memory) or if he doesn't mind older technology, even step into a Socket 939 setup and keep the DDR memory.

Newegg has a deal with a S939 board (their only one) and Sempron 3200+ for $90

AMD Sempron 64 3200+ Winchester 1.8GHz Socket 939 Single-Core Processor Model SDA3200DIO3BI - Retail
JetWay J939GT4-SLI-G 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

Also this is a PCIe based board, no AGP.

Otherwise the rest of the S939 procs run $27 to $170

This is only a stop gap though, usually if you can find a used board, use it for a short while but it would be a good idea to look at a new build in the near future as any AMD that is not AM2/AM2+ are getting too slow for any current programs.

Well, im building myself a new computer in 2 weeks, so im giving him my old one. So getting him a new one isnt really an option, he doesnt have any $$. hes getting it for free.

And yeah, it is a A7N8X-e deluxe mobo. I built this computer about 3 years ago. So all of the parts were top notch at the time.

it has 2gb ddr ram, 256mb nividia 6800gs AGP card, and 2 160gb hd's.

The only reason im building a new one was my mobo got fried. It still ran really well considering its age.

I still have a socket A computer running, with 1.5gigs of ram, an athlon 3200+xp, and a 7600gs... that thing still flies when it's running ubuntu. ( I have a 2nd one too, but it's an hp, and it has a sempron sitting in it right now, honestly not sure if the hp bios will like that chip, since the 3200+ originated from there, but I've been too lazy to check...)

Anyways, here a number of socket a boards, courtesy of pricewatch:Pricewatch | Buy Socket 462 Motherboards at the lowest price page 1 , seems to me like that pcchips board is going to be as good as any though (the one that newegg still caries).

Hmm, maybe something like ASRock K7VT6-C VIA KT600 Socket A ATX MB w/SND ASRock K7VT6-C K7VT6-C, but yeah, not seeing a whole ton of stuff out there. Everything but the budget level boards seems to be way overpriced...

I still have 2 SocketA systems running here (3000+ and 2600+) and they are still going strong, whereas the Pentium4 from the same generation is slowly dying. They are still strong and capable systems as long as you aren't trying to play newer games
