Default Asus A8N32-SLI Dlx

Whats the difference between a socket 939 and the AM2? My mobo asus a8n32sli delux says it can use a athlon 64 X2 proc. Does that make sense?

Athlon64s came in Socket 754, 939 and AM2
Athlon64 X2s came in Socket 939 and AM2

so one of the higher end Socket 939 X2s should work just fine

Thanks HL and Corsair!

I tried to tell this to Stinger and he would not believe me.

Now I have some proof.

Yeah, just the pin count, and the fact that socket AM2 uses DDR2 memory (instead of DDR). X2 processors come in both s939 and AM2 flavoring.

s939 = 939 pins
AM2 = 940 pins (not compatible with the previous s940)

As I told you fasttazz, you can not install an AM2 processor in a s939 board!!!!

Both the s939 and AM2 have the x2 dual core processors. Read my system specks. I am running the dual core 3800 s939 chip. I can not install a AM2 chip in this board nor can I run DDR2 on this board.

In order to run DDR2 you have to have the new Intel, or AMD AM2 boards.

AMD made the X2 CPU's in both sockets although s939 processors are no longer being made AFAIK. With AMD CPU's, the memory controllers are ON the CPU whereas Intel has the memory controller in the North Bridge of the motherboard chipset.

AMD socket 939 CPU's have a DDR memory controller on the CPU.

AMD socket AM2 has a memory controller that only works with DDR2 ram. AM2 is the newer socket from AMD.

If you have a socket 939 motherboard, you can only use DDR ram and a s939 cpu. You cannot use DDR2 ram.

If you have a newer mobo with socket AM2, you will have the newer memory controller and you must use DDR2 ram with that set up.

Joker has a s939 motherboard. Socket 939 CPU's were made up to and including the X2 5000 IIRC.
