Default Super Talent T800UX4GC5 4GB DDR2-800 4GB Review

A couple months back we took our first run at an enthusiast memory kit from Super Talent. The Super Talent T1000UX2G5 PC2-8000 2GB memory kit showed that the memory manufacturer has come a long way since expanding their focus from the OEM market to the consumer and enthusiast sectors. Joining the likes of Corsair, Crucial, OCZ, Mushkin, Kingston, and others, Super Talent has made a name for themselves by bringing to market memory kits known as much for their overall value as their impresssive performance. - Rich Caporali

Really good write-up, Rich. If your goin' 64-bit, looks like it's 4GB for you. Wish I could write articles like the HL staff.

While I understand part of what you where talking about in price I am curious why the alternative of using two 2 gig 2x1 kits was not mentioned? I have found a number of 2x1 for around $80 at speed 800 this means 4 gig at around $160.

I mean I do understand the desire to leave two slots open or for those with only two slots, the 2x2 is the only way to go. But the 4x1 is a viable option and it is fairly cost effective.

It wasn't mentioned because this is a review of this type kit not 2 2x1 kits.

I would go with the 2x1 just for the price though. Kind of like when the 2x1 kits first came out it was better to go with 4x512 at the time as far as cost.

There are usually other limitations that 4x1 brings, like clock speed and latencies. I tinkered with two 2x1 kits of PC2-9600, and couldn't get it stable at anything over PC2-8000. You'll see the rare exception where someone can actually OC 4x1GB.....but you'll also notice much looser timings and higher voltages......which are never good for 24/7 operation.

While you realistically can use 4 sticks, its the upgrade ability, the cooling, and performance that make unattractive for most......not that it can't be done.

Very nice review! I enjoyed the fact that the merits of using 4GB kits for 32bit and 64bit OS's was covered in the article as well as background information given to explain the 32bit OS limitations. The first two pages were so well done, that a separate article about all this could have been submitted. =)

At first I wasn't sure..... I was planning on posting this article last week, but didn't feel completely comfortable with it (Ask Paul, I'm never happy with my work). I ran every kit I have at a variety of setting in both 32 and 64-bit environments, tried all the hacks, and honestly think 4GB kits are great, but we're seeing really the dawn of a new era, and I suspect, over the next several months, as high density kits mature, you're going to see 4GB kits both become mainstream and the choice of enthusiasts..

Having said all of that, until looking around, i didn't realize how many people thought you could run a 4GB kit in a 32-bit OS, and use the full 4GB. I also agree that the entire topic could be used as the basis of a full article on its own.
