| Hey, there is a possibility I will be getting my mom's old computer. It is a dell with a 2.4 GHz pentium 4. Now, the question I have is this, It only has 256MB of RAM, and I don't even know what kind. But my dad said that it was something weird, and it would cost like $600 to upgrade, and it would be worth more to buy a new computer. What would make it cost so much to upgrade? Is my Dad full of it? Just Wondering. Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @2.66GHz 2GB DDR2 RAM NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT |

| Haha, see, I would be all over that, but He is in between jobs and can't afford it. But that computer is still better than the piece im on now. It also has a GeForce4 420MX Graphics card, I'm thinking about getting the all-in-wonder ATi x800xt pro. My brother has it and it's pretty sweet, but with only 256MB, I don't know if it's worth it. :/ Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @2.66GHz 2GB DDR2 RAM NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT |

| Modder-ator | Well, getting RAM For Dell's is kindof particular, but it shouldn't cost anywhere even close to $600. If you want to stick with that computer, I would definately suggest upgrading to more RAM (at least another 256MB stick). Try powering down the system, removing the power plug from the power supply, and then opening up the case and remove the memory. Tell us what it says on the little sticker on the memory and that will indicate what kind of RAM you need to get. Usually any type of value RAM from Kingston or Corsair or OCZ will work fine. What do you primarily use this computer for? If you don't play games or render high end stuff, then you might be fine with the video card you have. While a 9800Pro is a good card, I would not suggest it because it is extremely old technology and they are very hard to find anymore. So if you do manage to find one, it will be more money than it is worth. I would go with a Radeon X series card (like the X800 you mentioned) or a 6600GT or something. |

| It might be RDRAM which is very expensive. Not $600 but more than twice the cost of DDR. |

| Yeah, I looked for RDRam for my brothers Dell 8200 and it was gonna be like $200 to upgrade it to 512. Total jip. You could always beat up mat next time you're over and take his RDRAM :P :P OH! and I don't know if we welcomed him yet or not, but volksmeer a homie of mine as well as part of The Canada Plan trinity! ![]() |

| You're definitely talking about RDRam. If you're going the route of a new system: Don't buy a new comouter, build a new computer. I take it that drew knows this business, and could lend you all the know-how needed.
