RAM frequency and OC'ing

I recently tried to overclock my pc which didn't go well at all (first try) and the thing refused to boot and I think it was the memory that caused that. the cpu speed is 2.8ghz pentium D 915 (200X14) and the RAM is running at 266Mhz. Would I get better OC'ing results if i put the RAM frequency down to 200Mhz?

What is your ram?
You have to match or underclock your ram's frequency using your memory multiplier
Example:
My memory is DDr2 800mhz
My memory multiplier is 2 and my FSB is 400
2 x 400 = 800 = stable
if I were to up it to 450FSB, it would be 900mhz, which is overclocking the ram, which most likely wouldnt be stable 100% of the time.

so it all matters on what your ram is and if your FSB x Memory Multiplier = <Your memory's speed

DDR2 667 = your speed, right?

So you have to ensure your FSB x memory multiplier is less than or equal to 667

how do i find out the memory multiplier?

its in your Bios. it might be set to "AUTO" instead of a number. so you have to look in each thing.

I looked in my bios and the only one close is the frequency setting which is set to auto (266Mhz DDR2-533) but I can change it to 200Mhz ddr2-400 or 333Mhz ddr2-667. could not find a multiplier. (AMI bios)

hmm... I don't know what to say. You'll just have to experiment or find a manual on ur mobo and overclocking on google.

thats exactly what you are looking for, its called the memory divider, and it sets the memory speed based off your FSB.

If you are using DDR2-667, you want set it to DDR2-667.....from there, you can adjust your FSB to overclock it if you desire.......you'll notice as you change the FSB, the memory divider will change too.

I don't have any ASUS boards on hand right now, but hopefully simple_inhibition or someone else who has one can give you a good step by step for tinkering with your BIOS settings.

ok, i accutually moved it down to 200 making the fsb:ram 1:1. it seems to be running faster and more stable but is it any good for overclocking?
