Default OCZ or MB problem?

Hey guys....The first test I ran on my memory was that OCCT test I read about on here. I don't think it did it right because I went into "settings" and set it to "ram" and clicked "ok" to save it. It ran the standard thirty minutes...but the whole time it was saying it was testing my cpu. It didn't show any error though.

Second test was memtest not memtest86. I couldn't figure out how to get Memtest86 on a cd to where it would work. I saved it straight to my cd (zipped, like it said) , burned it...reinserted it...and nothing. It said it didn't have the program to run it. Anyway....memtest couldn't run all available memory, so I did what it said and ran two of them at the same time with half on each. About 875 or something like that. One ran fine, the other kept showing errors. Inside of 2 minutes I had like 7 "inaccurate copy" and one "pair does not store values accurately" error.

Took one of the sticks out, ran it over night. About 8 hours with no errors. Ran the other stick today for about 4 1/2 hours with no errors.

When I first turn my computer on...and that info screen comes on: when it gets to memory it says...."pc2 5300 dual channel interleaved" (I don't know if that's what it should say or not) and it's recognizing that I have 2048 of Ram though. However, it should read pc2 6400 because that's what I got. I can ask how to fix that once we get this other thing taken care of.

I want to run them in dual channel....I read the asus manual. I have them in the correct slots. Orange slots, Dimm-b1 and Dimm-a1 for dual channel like the book said.

So why all the errors when I ran both sticks at the same time with 2 memtest's going (splitting the ram in half)?

I would test with Memtest86+, I think that is a more accurate application. Download the "Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)" and save it to your hard drive, then unzip the files to your hard drive ( should be "memtest86+-1.70.iso" file). Then use a program like Nero (or some other CD burning application of your choice) and tell it to burn a disk from an image and use the "memtest86+-1.70.iso" file you just extracted. Then boot from your optical drive with the disk in there and it should boot up into Memtest86+ and start testing.

Your RAM is booting at DDR2-667 speed because that is what companies are doing now for the DDR2-800 and faster RAM to make sure it will boot in any machine. It is guaranteed to run DDR2-800 speeds, but they just program it to boot at DDR2-667 to make sure it will at least start up. You are supposed to change it in the BIOS to the correct stock rated speeds.

GV,

Heres what I did: downloaded it to my c drive, extracted it to my c drive, used nero essentials to "burn an image that has been previously burned to the hard drive" (that's one of the options), made a cd....

I checked my bios settings...in the boot sequence ( I think) it listed my optical drive 1st and my hard drive 2nd. I assume its set to boot from the optical like that, yes?

I put the cd in, restarted the computer...and nothing. Up comes windows xp.

What did I do wrong?
(I don't know if it makes a difference, but when I looked at the types of video files the nero essentials plays..it didn't list ISO files any where.)

If you got a floppy drive, it's much easier to make a bootable floppy with MemTest86+.

Hmmm, it sounds like you burned it correctly. While in Windows, put in the MemTest86+ disk that you burned. Then go to "My Computer", right click the optical drive where the disk is and select "Explore". What files are on the disk? I've burned a couple Memtest CD's so far without a problem, I find it easier than dealing with the floppies.

GV,

Bingo...part of the problem is solved. all it has on the disk is the "read me" file. It says....memtest86 is on the boot sector of this cd, just boot from this cd and memtest86 will launch.

Soooooo, I guess I'll need a little hand holding through the Bios. This is what I know for sure so far....Hit delete while it's starting up to get me to the Bios screen. I see the tabs at the top. That's about all I know, for certain.

In your previous post it sounded like you did it correctly. You will go into the BIOS (by hitting the DEL key during POST). Then arrow down (or over, depending on your BIOS) to "Advanced BIOS Options". There should be a place here where you can set the boot order of devices. You will want to arrange it so it boots from the optical drive first, then the hard drive. Then make sure you do SAVE and Exit so it saves the changes (or else it will just disregard the changes you made and revert back to what you had before).

EDIT:
After taking a quick look at your motherboard's manual, ot looks like you have to go to the "Advanced" tab section at the top and select "Boot Device Priority". Here you will just hit enter on the 1st Boot Device and select your optical drive from the list. The hit enter on 2nd Boot Device and select your hard drive.

Yeah, I have an ASUS board as well, and Blake's right. Hopfully your RAM won't fail MemTest86+!! (It won't; OCZ doesn't fail)
